Kinosternon subrubrum

Not to be confused with the Sonoran mud turtle, Eastern mud turtles of various subspecies and common names are dispersed throughout the eastern part of the US in TX and from Fl to southern NY, but most common in the southeastern portion of the US. They tend to walk on the bottom of water than swim. They live in and around water and are mostly killed off by cars when crossing the road and habitat destruction. They hibernate underground in the colder month, except in southern Fl. They have a rounded shell and are brown in color. Mud turtles are omnivorous and will eat almost anything that they can catch, including carrion, and that will fit in its mouth.
