Notophthalmus viridescens

Eastern newts have three stages of life: (1) the aquatic larva or tadpole with gills, (2) the red eft or terrestrial juvenile stage with lungs and with a bright orangish-red color and dark red spots outlined in black in which the eft is able to travel to different ponds, and (3) the aquatic adult in which they are able to breed. Some salamanders skip the eft stage and never lose their gills. They eat worms and small insects. They are 3 subspecies and are located in the eastern part of the US.
