Cynomys parvidens

Utah prairie dogs are the smallest of all the prairie dogs. They hibernate and eat vegetation. They are federally protected and are listed as a threatened species. There are approximately 7,000 left in the wild and there were 100,000 Utah prairie dogs in the early 1900s before land development and farmers destroy their range and killed them. Their presence helps other animals, as they provide food and shelter for many other animals like snakes, owls, badgers, coyotes, foxes, hawks, and other rodents.
