Lead a group of 11, 9 were first time R2R hikers. Finally get to do this hike after 13 months of planning and waiting. We were lucky enough to reserve one 10 sleeper cabin and one dorm bed. Only my wife and I plus one other couple had ever hiked in the canyon and let me tell you ALL of us were pumped when the day finally got here
We took the shuttle from the S. Rim to N. Rim....had a group dinner at the N Rim Lodge and stayed the night. Got on the 5:45 AM, now free, shuttle to the N. Kaibab trail head. My first time stopping at Ribbon Falls and it was fabulous! I've been in the Canyon twice in September and this time of year has much more water flowing in the creeks.
We had a two night stay at Phantom Ranch. First stop a beer and a shower...right? They had a water line break so only drinking water available from the community facet in front of the canteen. No water in the sinks or toilets so after every toilet use you had to fill a bucket with water that was pumped from the nearby creek and pour it down the toilet bowl. The shower was in the Bright Angel Creek and I don't want to know what the temperature was! Everybody was a good sport about it. June 4th was my 63rd birthday and we celebrated for days before and after...I'll post a pic
We had the 5 AM breakfast on our second day at the Ranch with a goal of heading up Bright Angel Trail at 6 AM... great group as we were all on time. We stayed together to Indian Gardens and were only about 30 minutes apart as 3 small groups made there way to the top. I'd always bonked in those last 3 miles and was determined not to this time. I put in about 3X the miles I've done in the past over the last 6 weeks prior to the hike, ate more on the way up, and drank more electrolytes. It did the trick
Down N. Kaibab with stop at Ribbon Falls:8hr 40 min
Up Bright Angel:6hr 38 min.
