I started my day of looking around newly re-opened areas of the Chiricahua Mountains by going to one of my favorite sections. It sure was nice to finally get down there for the first time this year! Fortunately things were in pretty good shape (all things considered) to the end of the road. Sycamore Campground was a little roughed up by increased runoff, otherwise came through fine. The West Turkey Creek Campground has been eliminated (per prior FS plans) and a new bathroom was installed in Sycamore. A few of the old summer cabins in there burned, but most survived.

Sycamore Campground holds many great memories for me. It is the first place I ever camped, back in October 1983 (under a sycamore tree with the moon and a nighttime thunderstorm to make it spooky)! I miss being able to camp in the back section, which was made off limits in the "campground improvement" that was done back in 2000. Sometimes FS campground improvements are just the opposite. Regardless, I still love this place and the great network of trails that emanate from it.
