So I decided to stay outside of Red Rock Canyon to avoid the entrance fee, and this Mt. Wilson was the so-called "bad boy of the red rocks", so I was intrigued. Found a description from a local meetup group who did this via the First Creek Trail. The approach is flat and easy, but once you get into the canyon, your guess is as good as mine getting to the summit. As a matter of fact, I wasn't quite sure which peak it was, my topo wasn't naming the peaks. But I just went to explore. It started to get really hard to follow and I had to do a lot of bushwhacking and guessing on where to go, but I did find some cairns here and there. I also stumbled upon a cool little spring amongst some giant boulders. It was a pretty canyon, and a lot thicker than it looks from the road. I scrambled up some class 3 stuff, and at one point I stopped to check my topo map to see where to go next and realized I didn't have my phone.
OMG, how the HELL was I ever going to retrace that
route??? It's a new phone though, and I love it, so I had to change direction for the day and be on a mission to find my phone instead of the summit. Depending on how far back it was (if I ever found it, that was) was going to determine the rest of my day. It was already slow going due to all the boulder hopping, bushwhacking and trail finding I was having to do.
I kept going down, down, down, back as much the way I'd come as I could possibly retrace. I was looking at all the shiggy along side of me and thinking wherever it dropped, it could've slid down into any of this mess! I was hoping that the phone would ring or a text would come through so I could hear it, as I was getting service pretty far into the canyon!
I was trying to figure out how I would go about getting another phone while out of town if this one didn't turn up. It was going to be a nightmare. Amazing how lost we are without these things! (Literally, it had my maps on it as well!
Finally, about 3/4 of a mile back down, the phone was sitting propped atop a small boulder, as if someone had placed it there.
Hmmmmmm.....there was NOT a SOUL on trail the whole time I was in that canyon. The only people I saw were climbers on the rockface to the left of me, and that was far away. Do do do do......do do do do....... Oh well, I was just ecstatic to find the phone!!!!! So I got out of the canyon, ran back to the car and decided the hell with it, I'll go pay the $7 and do a hike in the park. Should be easier to follow and I'll know exactly how much time I'll have. On to Turtlehead Peak! Bad boy Wilson will have to wait until next time.
