It was day 2 of Escape From The Arctic Wasteland. Last winter's Flatiron hike fell through but today seemed like a good day...

I parked at the free trailhead and hit the trail at 2 pm. It had been nearly 7 years since my last Flatiron visit and all the familiar sights and good memories came flooding back. I reached the top of Siphon Draw at 3:30, hoping to have time to summit Superstition Peak 5024' and visit the Flatiron itself. I was immediately greeted by the sad sight of the recent plane crash. I walked past it to the northwest corner of the mountain and began climbing the slope up toward peak 5024'. I stumbled onto a well worn and cairned route (knew there had to be one) and was soon standing atop the highpoint of Superstition Mountain 5024', a goal of mine for many years. The view was amazing. I stood atop for awhile, taking it all in. Heading down, I went over to the Flatiron itself, arriving not long before sunset. The mountaintop was bathed in golden light. I peered over the sheer drop on the south edge, took many a photo, then began the hike back down deserted Siphon Draw. The moon had risen and dusk had long since passed by the time I reached the waterfall/slick rock area. I made the hike back under moonlight, never really needing my headlamp, just enjoying the sights and sounds of the desert at night. It was great to see you again, Flatiron. :) I've missed you.
