Met up with Pam at the Mormon Trail TH for my first ever South Mountain hike. We shuttled over to the Central TH and headed up the Holbert Trail. Pretty views and a nice hike. We hooked onto the National Trail and enjoyed easy cruising along the ridgeline. I liked all the little hidden draws along the ridgeline on National - very pretty. We then dropped into Hidden Valley! I was almost too fat for Fatman's Pass, but squeezed through. Of all of South Mountain we did on the hike, Hidden Valley seemed the most familiar to me. Why? It reminded me of Grand Gulch (or White Canyon, or Bridge Canyon, etc.). Lots of wash crossing, negotiating pourovers, scrambling around boulders, and lots of overhanging rocks and some arches. Drop the saguaros, change the rocks to tan and I'd say we were on Cedar Mesa!
We backtracked a little bit on National to get to Mormon. Two huge groups on Mormon Trail, apparently tours. Busier hiking than I'm used to! We made good time down Mormon, and even ran into Denny (tortisehiker) near the bottom! Cool! Back to the truck, then back over to Central so I could drop off Pam. Hit some Phoenix traffic, so I didn't make it home until 4:20, but still - an excellent trip! Looking forward to hiking up at South Mountain again!

How To Put Out a Campfire
A campfire must be extinguished by drowning it with water, stirring with a shovel, and repeating that process until the campfire is cold to the touch. A campfire is still a danger if it has any trace of heat, and must not be left or abandoned. Wildfires can begin by abandoned campfires that rebuild heat on windy days and then blowing embers ignite surrounding grasses and brush.
