Thursday's short hike reminded me of the potential fun of a short hike to the Brown's Ranch ruins at the crossover trail intersection with Gateway Loop trail. I told Caroline we were hiking to a play house to have a snack and she could wear a real back pack with her own "Camelpack". I have an old tiny pink Camelback backpack with 0.75 L that's for joggers or something-- perfect for a 3 year old. Took her a bit to figure out the water spout with a few puddles in the living room - but then she conquered it and was on top of the world!
Drove the less than half a mile from our house to 104th parking area - kind of pathetic but didn't want to peak too soon by hiking to trailhead and then turning around to walk back home. George was ready to crash and went right to sleep in the ERGO as soon as we started out. Caroline hiked every step of that miserable Levee trail herself. She plucked some creosote and put it into a bouquet for me and we sang nursery rhymes but inserted desert words instead. Like for Old MacDonald we did Javalina and Bobcat. Little Miss Muffet sat on a cactus - hardy har har - but 3 year olds go crazy for that stuff!
Went from Levee Crossover Ranch ruins and back same. Never really touched Gateway trail - and never touched Paradise trail so not sure where to log this ridiculously short walk. But I like keeping track of our mini hikes even if they are tiny in distance. Caroline ate a crusher (she loves the ferocity of that word - "I need a crrrrusshhher Mommy!" of fruit/veggie something or other inside the playhouse ruins. We played kitchen like we were baking cookies. And she picked an area that would be her room if we lived there. George fussed and the sun was setting so we went back the same way to the car. A couple of little spills but no injuries. No screaming or crying. A very good little walk in the desert with my babies. I'm sure we will be picnicking at the playhouse ruins again soon!
