After a few days of entertaining my cousin and her family from Norway, with beer, mexican food, and spring training, I decided it was imperative for me to do something a little bit more healthy. If I recall correctly, it was at Taste of Tops that it was proposed that Flatiron would be a good challenge, and indeed it was!
I was in no hurry, and didn't leave the house until around noon. It was a perfect Sunday, reaching only 70F, an over 20-degree drop from Saturday. The resulting cold front also brought a pleasant breeze, that became a refreshing 20-30mph wind that whipped up Siphon Draw with awesome evaporative cooling power. Out of the draw, it was a more moderate 10-15mph.
So, I checked the HAZ forum before I left to double-check the status of the Siphon Draw parking
along McKellips Road. Sure enough, no problems. The "rock wall" doesn't exist anymore, but I was surprised to find only two other cars parked there. One before the last high-clearance section of the road, and one at the end of the road. I parked in the very nicely graded gravel "lot" at the end of the road. There were no signs indicating that it was either ok, or not ok to park there, and there were no signs marking a trailhead, though it was blatantly obvious where to go.
So anyway, I was enjoying the cool weather and wind, which made the hike/climb a whole lot easier, but I still had to take a few short breaks along the way since I wasn't expecting it to be as steep as it was. I managed to get to the top in 2:05, including my little breaks to catch my breath or take a photo. After about 15 minutes up top, I headed down, getting back in about 1:15.
Just before getting back to the car, I ran into tibber and hikergirl who were taking some photos of mistletoe along the trail. Always nice to run into some fellow HAZers along the way!
Note: I posted a GPS route because from the McKellips Rd parking lot, this hike is really only about 2.3 miles each way.
