Brian and I car camped just off the Cherry Creek road at Deep Creek. We decided to go down the short and steep looking canyon to get into Cherry Creek just south of a slickrock and falls section we had seen a year or so before. We followed a bear trail. However there were poison ivy thickets that were just incredible with some plants 7-8 feet tall and unavoidable. We both had long pants and sleeves on for this part. We got thru there and a short 10 foot pour over we circumvented then noted the animal trail was gone. A little farther we saw why--a 40-50 foot pour over. Charlie about bought the farm here, he was trying to find a way down but fortunately is well trained and immediately responded when we called him back.

We traversed over the point, picked up the trail and it took us steeply and butt slidingly down to the Shangri-La pools of Cherry Creek. Huge, languid, clear and bordered with sheer cliffs and greenery. Minutes upcanyon came to the big swimmer. We backtracked and got up on the bench and then followed cattle trails around the now getting deeper ( or we were going up higher) canyon. An amazing long pool, probably 300 yards, with big rock walls,we were probably 100 or more feet above it. Our traverse paid off dumping us at the area of the falls, I got some more pictures, the water was down from when I first saw them. Now Brian wanted up to go up and over to the road back to the car. Well, it was a bushwack from hell but it was short and he is a good routefinder so we got to the road and back to the car in short order. As we drove out we looked over other access routes. Horse Camp Canyon looks real good as does a section of Cherry Creek just down from where we were and just down from Horse Camp.
A few more trips in store. And I want to go back when a little hotter and swim that pool.
