I awoke at 5 this morning to find that my morning commitments had been canceled. Looking for an impromptu way to fill an available weekday morning, I figured an ascent up to Flatiron would be the best solution. I made it to the trailhead at 7 and set out on Siphon Draw, all the while wondering if the weather was going to clear up by the time I made it to the top. My only difficulty on the trail was getting up the slick, wet surface of the washes. Other than that, the hike was fairly consistent in pace and I made it to the top in 2 hours. My attempts to continue further down the ridge, past peak 5024, were futile with the thick fog that blanketed the landscape beyond 20 feet. I spent an hour, exploring around the top, accompanied only by the sound of the whispering fog drifting over the ridgeline. I should note that I also experienced several phases of precipitation. There was pea-sized hail on the way up through the upper canyon, some light snowfall at the top, and a sprinkle of rain on the way down. Regardless of how difficult the weather made the surface conditions, I'd gladly take this weather over the scorching sun in June. Despite my suspicions, going down wasn't as bad as I've heard from some friends. I made it back to the parking lot in a little under an hour. What a fun hike!...
