Didn't do the loop, just went a little ways past the box and then back. Put on a few extra miles exploring.
The Boulder Trail from Canyon Lake is quite scenic once you get over the first hump. There are some incredible rock formations out there and the views off the trail are spectacular. Photos just don't do them justice. Of course, you pay for all of this beauty with some considerable AEG, which is more noticeable on the return. I could see from the high trail that, except for the section close to the lake, most of La Barge Creek was dry up to my point of entry. There were several boulders in the creek bed that were loaded with geodes like those in Fish Creek. I am continually amazed at the wide variety of geology in the Supes. Makes me wonder if there is any type of rock on the planet that isn't represented in our little playground here. As you near the box, the dry creek becomes a series of pools with flowing water surrounded by trees. This garden atmosphere ends abruptly with a vast section of large boulders choking the entrance to the box. Once you navigate around them, you are in another world! It is something you just have to see for yourself.
The hike back was a killer. It's a bit too warm now to be doing this one... probably why I was the only person out there all day. I was ever watchful for snakes, but didn't see or hear any. Saw two water turtles in one of the box pools and a coyote on the trail, but they wanted no part of me and were much faster than my camera.
This is a fabulous hike. If you haven't already, it's a 'must do'. But, wait until the cool weather returns!
