I had big plans for this hike that ended up falling through... I planned to hike to the falls and camp there the first night, then continue up to Deadman canyon on the divide trail and camp there the second night. well, I got to the falls and set up camp on Monday evening, ate an early dinner, and went and explored the waterfall area. After it got dark I headed back to camp to wind down. Really, really dark clouds started rolling in and, not having brought any rain gear or a rain fly for the tent (the forecast as of ealier that morning was mostly clear for the night and mostly sunny for the day), I started getting a bit worried. I called my mom (plug for Verizon) and had her check the forecast for me... There was a 50% chance of rain that night in Payson and probably a much better chance in the mountains above Payson. I sat and thought about it for a while and decided it would be a better idea to hike back to the truck. I had no way to stay dry and warm if it stormed that night and didn't want to risk it. The hike back was really cool, as night hikes (a weekly event for me) usually are.
After returning to the Barnhardt trailhead I drove up to the Rock Creek trailhead to explore that area the following day. Of course it didn't rain that night and I slept like a baby in the back of my truck.
