This month is Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month so they have an open house at Tonto National Monument. My husband and I had never been even though it is almost in our back yard. They have all access to all ruins on this two day weekend. So we took a quick trip up to the lower dwellings and then just barely made it to the trailhead before they closed the trail to upgoing traffic at 2pm. We got there at 155 and were the last up the trail. On these two days you have about 4 or so rangers along the trail as well at the ruins to keep an eye on you but you are allowed to wander along at your own pack on the trail and in the ruins. The trail is a really nicely done trail and wanders thru the creek until the switchbacks take you up the hill to the ruins. We took our time since the wildflowers are just amazing up there right now. There was flowers every inch all the way up the hill. Mainly those are popcorn flowers and fiddlenecks. But there were lots of owl clover, lupine, poppies, blue dicks, and other flowers. It was nice being the last up there since we only had 4 people up at the ruins. Then we hiked on down the trail. There were some rangers in one spot with a rattlesnake coiled up. They were just protecting it from the people going down. It was a little warm but the views are really nice from all along the trail. If you have a chance this time of year is one of the best to do it so you can enjoy the wildflowers too.
