I decided to hike up to Peak 5057 today; this is probably the 15th time that I have been up there.

We did an out-and-back from the Hieroglyphic TH by going up and down through Hieroglyphic Canyon.

It was mostly a cool, cloudy, and breezy day, although the sun would occasionally come out and warm things up.

As others have reported, there was a lot of heavy fire damage all along the ridgeline from Hieroglyphic Canyon over to 5057. I wonder how much erosion that there will be along the trail whenever some heavy rainstorms hit the area.

It was a good but tiring hike.

Wake 3:15, out 5, meet 5:15.1st TH 6, start 7. Cruised through the 1st mile. The next 3 were brutal. Felt like we were on a summit when we obtained the ridge. While far from easy, it does mellow out some from there.

Regardless, between the many ups and downs, RF & slippery surfaces, this outing remains difficult throughout. We added a minor peak with some fantastic views. When we finally spotted the Flat Iron dome, I knew it was mostly downhill from there.

However, since we parked further out than the park, we had to continue beyond. I wanted to keep it basic but was outvoted. Epic adventure that had been on my list for 6 years! Plz note, I consumed over 5 liters during this outing. A 1st for me. That pack was painful!

A fantastic way to start the new year....a place I haven't visited before, despite hiking all over the superstitions. Beautiful views, few other hikers encountered, and a special visit from a herd of bighorn.

The hike up the Carney Springs trail is very steep, requiring a bit of scrambling in some places. Mostly easy to follow with a few braided trails as you near the saddle. Definitely enjoyed the views of the hoodoos as well as looking down canyon and further out in the distance during my numerous rest stops on the way up.

Once past the saddle, the ridgeline trail is fairly easy to follow - though it can be a bit challenging in the burned regions in the west boulder canyon drainage. Views continue to impress even in the burned areas with interesting rock features all around.

The summit of the three sisters yields solitude and incredible views of weavers needle and other distant reaches of the superstitions. After enjoying the view, return the way you came...or as close to it as you can manage :)

My knees and ankles were not appreciative of my efforts, though a dose of ibuprofen and acetaminophen and a good nights rest seem to have recovered them both fairly well.

Started 2pm Friday from the peralta trail head. Went up bluff springs trail and deviated on an arroyo early on. That was a good lesson to learn early. Spotted a few water pots while off trail. We found our way back to the intersection with terrapin and continued on Bluff springs to dutchman. Stayed on dutchman until charliebois. This was the make or break for us, and fortunately plenty of water to be had... also a turtle in the water! Very friendly.

Day 2 we continued on dutchman all the way to lost dutchman s.p. The highlight was a large rattlesnake that was clear with us the trail was hers. At the s.p. a very kind ranger welcomed us in. A snickers ice cream plus 4 hr respite under the sunshade during prime heat before round 2. A roadrunner visited us for some water, guessthat is when you knowits hot. 4pm we started the climb up siphon draw. It was slow and difficult. We carried 8 liters each up the climb. The views were fantastic and only got better. Had a cowboy camp on flatiron and a benevolent ringtail fox paid us a visit. Long day. Great day.

Day 3
Started with the sunrise and off to Ridgeline... way finding quite a bit. Sumitted superstition mtn. Then continued on until Dacite (this was a great decision) which j-shaped us back towards weavers needle to the peralta trail at Fremont saddle. Dacite was totally new territory. Really loved it. Finished the loop down peralta to the car.

It was hot and we planned for it. We had 8 liters each at all water fills, plus starting wet. It was no joke out there with the 100 degree heat, however we never felt out of comfort or safety. I sleuthed quite a bit from this community and am grateful for it.

I've recorded this loop five times and have probably completed it more than ten. I suppose it was time to publish a guide for it then. :-s Hieroglyphic Spring was still slightly trickling, but funky like usual. I'd guess the families and kids that only make it this far still think it's everything is awesome. It was enjoyable ascending the canyon for once without an obscene number of cairns along the way. Perhaps people are catching on that a duck every five feet really isn't necessary (reference the Wave Cave arrows erased for more context). It also was nice to experience the Supes in mid-May with all the wildflowers and fresh leaf outs. The heat usually keeps me away, but today had substantial wildflowers. The flaming yellow and red Dudleya stalks were peaking. I reached the summit in two hours and speaking of culmination, there was an entomology orgy of flying ants, bee flies and tarantula hawks circling. The former two groups were dive bombing and getting spunky with each other, where the ants were antisocial and not crossing over to the other species. :-k I was at the West Boulder Saddle before eight, about three hours into the hike, where there was still some good shade at the pass. After this brief and final break, the stretch dash got hot. Along Goldmine was the only place I saw another person, which was south of Turks Head. She had just turned around, informing me that half her water supply was gone, and she wouldn't be finding the bygone gold mine. Definitely a better, more diverse, scenic and challenging loop than the intensive forest bath of the [ Derrick - Horton Loop ]

Perfect weather day during the roller coaster of weather we've been having this March! I couldn't have been more lucky. A group of friends had planned to hike the Ridgeline & I tagged along last minute. All the usual fun going up Siphon Draw. I made a quick stop at 5024 while my friends took a break. Continued on along the Ridgeline, taking wrong trails here & there. There are a lot more trails along the Ridgeline from the last time I hiked it. We would follow one for a bit, it would become clear that the route became impassable or unnecessarily dangerous and we would backtrack and a very well-used trail would appear. I made another quick stop at 5057 while my friends waited and I found a letter in a bottle hidden under a boulder at the summit (but no ammo box and no summit log). The letter in the bottle was numbered #9. I wonder what other peaks letters are hidden at. Caught back up with my friends and we oohed and ahhed at the "raging river" of water flowing along the north side of the trail as we made our way towards Carney Springs trail.

This is a fun and challenging hike, so I decided to do it before the winter hiking season comes to a close.

I got to the trailhead early, but there were already a few cars there.

There was lots of water in Hieroglyphic Canyon which was nice to see. I thought that there might be a bit of snow up on ridgeline, but it had all melted, even in shady places along the trail.

It was a really nice day for the hike -- sunny, cool, with a very light breeze.

It is always nice to be on the Supes Ridgeline, so this is a good hike to do every now and then.

Set up a shuttle from Hieroglyphics TH, and then circled over to start the hike from Siphon Draw.

Hit the trail at 6:45. Seemed like the trail and route had been altered/eroded quite a bit from the recent rains.

On the traverse, clouds came and went, providing a variety of different looks/perspectives. Layers were helpful, as the temps fluctuated with the cloud cover and occasional light breeze.

Upon reaching the Hiero turn off, we decided to press on and tag 5057 before circling back. As we approached, the peak was covered in clouds. But we timed it well and enjoyed clear views when we topped out.

Some nice water still running through Hiero.

Another great day in the Supes.

Schedules finally aligned to get a hike in with ishamod before the end of the year. I usually try to avoid repeats, but I hadn't been to 5057 in almost four years, so when he voted for this one, I was in. We started just before sunrise from Hieroglyphic Trailhead with a few vehicles arriving just as we pulled up. Two hikers were already heading back as we approached the petroglyphs, so we had that area to ourselves, and there were some small pools but no flowing water.

I'd forgotten how well-defined the route is up Hieroglyphic Canyon--there was practically a trail much of the way and a nice path cut through some of the brushier spots. There was a little water in the bottom of the canyon and a few trickles in places, and the spires and scenery were great on the way up. We were finally in sunshine once we got up on the ridgeline and worked our way over to 5057.

The summit register that was there a few years ago is gone, but I did notice one of the reference marks I hadn't spotted last time, kind of oddly placed on top of a rounded boulder. We got there just in time to have the peak to ourselves for a while and eat at the top, then a group of three was heading up from the Balanced Rock route, and another solo hiker beat them to the top as we were about to start down. As we got back on the ridgeline route, we saw another solo hiker heading up toward 5057. [ youtube video ]

We detoured over to Three Sisters on the way down and enjoyed the views. There must've been 20+ vehicles at the Wave Cave lot, even on a weekday. On the way back to the ridgeline we passed a group of four approaching Three Sisters, then saw two more hikers down near the Boulder Creek origin, where there were some larger pools.

After hiking down Carney Spring and detoured over to Shaka Cave before finishing off the loop. We'd seen quite a few hikers all day--probably 10+ groups or individuals along the loop--but it was relatively quiet around the Wave Cave, and we managed to complete that final stretch without anyone asking us for directions to the cave. That might be the first time I've set foot anywhere near that trail and not been asked at least once...I think we should win a prize. Over the last mile or two, five or six powered paragliders were flying around.

We kept a pretty leisurely pace all day and took a lot of breaks at various spots along the way, so we finished just before sunset, but it was nice getting back up to 5057 after a few years and great catching up with ishmod again and getting one more hike in before the end of the year.

This is a repeat of a hike that I first completed this March. Unlike last time, I actually managed to get to the trailhead before sunrise, albeit still later than I had initially wanted. Nevertheless, given the relatively shorter November daytime and the addition of a handful of new elements, I ended up finishing in around the same amount of darkness. Moreover, daytime temps in the valley (so presumably also on the ridgeline) were about 10C higher than they had been in March, peaking in the low 30s. Curiously, I was, as far as I could tell, alone the entire day between the scramble toward balanced rock (during which I heard folks' voices at Hieroglyphics Falls at ~07:00) and the walk along First Water Road to SR-88 (~20:00).

The biggest difference between the two trips, however, was that I was forced to complete this one almost entirely without my glasses. I somehow managed to lose them just above Hieroglyphics Falls scarcely half an hour into the day. (They didn't fall off my face or anything like that—I simply set them down to wipe them and they disappeared.) I looked for them for over 20 minutes to no avail. Given how the rest of the weekend was predicted to be even warmer, I ultimately decided to continue without them. It's my impression that things move slowly in the desert absent rainfall, so I'll search for them more thoroughly when back in town... The silver lining was that between the binoculars that I had packed and my relative familiarity with the area, I didn't really have any severe issues with routefinding on the off-trail segments of the hike, even despite my abysmal eyesight (something like -5 in both eyes).

At any rate, I made it up to Peak 5057 without any other incidents via the "Balanced Rock" route modulo the modifications detailed in my previous triplog. From there, I carried on to the Three Sisters as before, after that beginning the long walk to Peak 5024.

I must have misplaced the main Ridgeline trail on the way back just southeast of Peak 5057 near where the spur trail diverges; I found myself following a well-trodden alternative, skirting the "tuft" of hoodoos just north of 5057 below and to the east as opposed to adjacent and to the west. I made it back onto the trail proper just fine, but it's visible on the GPS track where I backtracked along the main trail to figure out precisely where I had gone astray.

I then made it down the "crux" by which the summit block of 5057 is accessed from the north and from there to the base of topo marker 4790 in a reasonable timeframe. I ascended up to 4790 via the same crevice that I had previously accessed it, only this time I brought my backpack with me (using a rope to lower it on the way down). This emboldened me to wander around on top of the platform for a bit; the views of the remainder of the Superstitions were amazing, and those of Weaver's Needle were in particular arguably better than those from anywhere else on the mountain. Having rested and eaten/drank sufficiently, I descended the way I came and then continued moving north along the ridgeline.

The stretch of ridgeline between 4790 and Peak 5024 were all more or less as I remembered, albeit warmer, with Hiero Saddle, "Peak 4869", and Peak 5024's Key Col all passed in due time.

Once I made it onto the large block on which Peak 5024 and the Flatiron rest, I diverged from the Ridgeline trail as before, following the hoodoo-decorated "minor ridgeline" over to Peak 5024. This segment of the hike was more taxing than it should have been; I had forgotten the intricacies of the many routes through the hoodoos and had to do a fair bit of scrambling up and down that I otherwise could have avoided. I knew that I was almost in the home stretch when I saw the particularly memorable hoodoo whose silhouette is strongly reminiscent of a man with a green lichenous beard.

I then descended down to the Flatiron from 5024 ascended back to 5024 from the Flatiron via the standard route through the hoodoo maze; I had wanted to do this back in March but had ran out of food and time so skipped it. This was my first visit to the Flatiron all year and I was pleasantly surprised by how short the trip from 5024 to the Flatiron actually was (no more than 15mins in either direction).

By the time I was back at 5024 (~16:30), the shadows were beginning to get long, so I wasted little time in returning back to "Greenbeard" and starting the long and scrambly descent to Massacre Falls. Having never before hiked the area in Fall, I had not counted on the vegetation having grown as much as it did since March. This made for a comparatively uncomfortable bushwack in the beginning, especially in the upper reaches of Massacre Canyon, where some scrambling was involved. Eventually, however, I made it past that segment, and was pleased to see that the hike down was more or less as I had remembered, even as the amount of cairns and of spots where a social trail had begun to develop exceeded what I remembered. The sun set on me and dusk began during this segment of the trip.

Once I was just above Massacre Falls, I decided, foolishly, to attempt to descend the final scramble portion through the "window" via which I had many times ascended (but never previously descended). The effect of this was that I attempted to climb down to the Falls much farther east than was feasible, and it was only after a lot of confusing scrambling and being repeatedly forced west by cliff-outs in the blurry, rapidly-fading light (using the rope I had packed to plumb their depth and see whether they could be safely scrambled) that I finally found my way to the Falls. In the moment I was sure that I had taken an unnecessarily west-detoured downclimb to reach them; it was only when I consulted my GPS track in hindsight did I see that the route I had taken down was essentially that which I had ascended those many months ago.

From Massacre Falls, the walk to Jacob's Crosscut trailhead was mostly straightforward, following the Massacre Falls trail, although I did manage to misplace the trail on a few occasions, traversing the desert to rejoin it.

Overall, it was a fun trip despite some jolting hiccups, and I'm glad that I finally managed to complete the route I had initially envisioned including the points of interest that I had initially excluded when first hiking it in March. I don't know when I'll return to Superstition Mountain, but if the weather is favorable, then I'll certainly consider repeating it once more.

This morning's plan was to hike something easier in the Supes than this loop. I hadn't hiked for about a week, recovering from a debilitating :sk: Strep throat infection and also had to work some. :( On the early drive east, one of the US60 road signs was displaying AZ88 closed - rocks on the road. (perhaps it displays that always). I suppose we're not doing any hikes from the Canyon Lake area. As sunrise broke, one could see that the NW Supes were getting some action, lots of lightning and rain. I settled on the Hieroglyphic TH because I had my car. We chose CCW because the lightning was very active up on the ridgeline. Usually I'd complete this great hike at a brisker pace, but Dese and I had to shelter three times total, as each wave of rain rolled through with the accompanying and uncomfortably close lightning strikes. The final wave soaked us to the bone, but the sun emerged quickly afterwards. We dried out nearing the 5057 summit. It would of been nice to relax longer there, but swarming termite orgies just aren't my thing. On the descent, a large Coatimundi band crossed in front of us. There were at least three, small young ones (so cute) in the group and they all bristled orange. I've never been able to get a good pic of Coatimundi. Another large adult and one baby crossed behind us after we passed. They look like little monkeys easily scrambling the Supes' rocky terrain. This was a tough hike for Dese, but she powered through. She'll get a good rest this weekend because she isn't allowed to hike in the Grand.

5057 seemed like a good choice over doing Ord again. We started from Lost Goldmine in case we decided to return via Robbers Roost. Rising temps and time made for an easy decision to return the way we came once we got back to West Boulder Saddle.
The route has more side/spider trails than it used to, and most of them are cairned, making the trail tougher to follow. Things also look different now after the fire and all the growth following the winter rains.
The hike up is as I remembered. Work. Scenery is excellent though.
Descending was uneventful. The gnats were pesky the last couple miles, but fine if you keep moving.
Great to get back up on the ridgeline and the peak. Thanks Kelly. :)

Trip out on the Ridgeline from the park. Really great conditions and a very nice day. Air quality was excellent, even in the Valley. Lots of flowers and the ones on the ridge itself smelled really nice.

We made it as far as the pinyon I mentioned in my last log from early 2020. It is now dead post fire. The junction with the Hieroglyphics Canyon trail was too far for us. This hike is somehow a lot harder than the stats suggest, unless they are inaccurate and lower than it really was. I used Roy's 2018 route for them. I attribute the difficulty to the nature of the steep ascent to the iron. I remember that as being more fun in the past. Perhaps I was still tired from Kimball Wednesday and Sombrero Trails on Friday? One thing is for sure, we're going to have to train for CSP2ML in a month.

Great day on the ridgeline. Group of 4 started from Lost Dutchman State Park and arranged a key exchange with another group of 2, starting from Carney Spring.

We hit the trail about 7 am. Siphon draw was as busy as I've ever seen it. After leaving behind the Flatiron crowds, we had relative solitude until Hieroglyphic Canyon, where we met our key exchange and started seeing a handful of 5057 peakbaggers.

The route over/around 4869 and 4790 are always a little tricky when traversing from west to east.

Scrambled down Carney and saw my first diamondback of the year about 0.25 from the TH. He was a healthy one!

Beautiful weather for a day on the Ridgeline.

The goal of this hike, as the title suggests, was to traverse the Superstition Ridgeline without having to pass through any of the three main canyons by which it's usually accessed. (I'm just not a fan of Siphon Draw, Carney, or Hieroglyphic Canyon!)

Aside from the grave error of rolling out of bed at 08:00 and consequently having to circle the Hiero TH parking lot for over half an hour before finding parking, the trip, which I've divided into eight segments below, went smoothly. I hope to repeat it with minor modifications in the near future.

The first segment of the route was the usual walk from the Hieroglyphic TH to Hieroglyphic Falls on the Hieroglyphic Trail; nothing unusual, though at 09:30, I began much later than I would have liked.

The second segment was approximately the "Balanced Rock/South Ascent" route from the Falls to Superstition Peak 5057. To keep things interesting, I took a couple detours from the standard/cairned route. These involved some fun but short segments of class 3. In particular, I deviated southwest of the standard route when attacking the first major cliff band, hiking directly toward one of the "horns" visible from Hiero Falls instead of bypassing it via the balanced rock. Subsequently, I deviated northwest of the usual bypass of the second major cliff band, ignoring the large white spraypainted arrow directing ascending hikers rightward. Finally, upon having made it through the third and last big cliff band on the standard route and coming level with the summit block of 5057, I continued straight toward the peak instead of keeping east to meet the spur from the Ridgeline Trail.

The third and fourth segments involved traveling southeast along the spur and Ridgeline Trails from 5057 to the Three Sisters and then northwest along the Ridgeline Trail from the Three Sisters to the shallow saddle between 5057 and topo marker 4790 respectively. I was able to access the latter via a class 3+/4 indentation in the wall to its south.

The fifth segment was just continuing northwest along the Ridgeline Trail, from topo marker 4790 to just past topo marker 4562; the sixth segment was deviating north from the Ridgeline Trail to approach Supserstition Peak 5024 from the east, reaching the peak just as the sun was getting low in the horizon.

The trip's seventh segment was effectively a downward "reverse flatiron", descending northeast to the falls from the prominence just above it. Toward its end, the sun had set and twilight had begun, making for some great views of the hills to the north and of the Four Peaks off in the distance, but there was still sufficient light to navigate without a flashlight.

The eighth and final segment of the hike was a flashlight-aided walk to Jacob's Crosscut TH from the Falls via the Massacre Falls trail. (At which point I continued down the NF road and SR 88 to the Lost Dutchman parking lot, where I was picked up by a family member.)

Overall, this was a really enjoyable trip, though more challenging than my previous hikes in the area. Temps were in the 10-20°C range for the most part, and I ended up drinking about 5 of the 7 liters of water I brought with me, so I'll probably have to wait for the summer heat to wear off before I can attempt a repeat.

RouteScout crashed and dumped all my routes today, so the included route for this hike is not an actual track, but one I created in a map editor. Also kind of lame and sad that Peak 3845' had a summit jar essentially full of garbage. Scouted several areas searching for existing and possible climbing routes. Most definitely some with potential if one enjoys big approaches. :)

It has been almost a year since I had hiked to Peak 5057, so I decided to get up there while the temps were still cool.

Actually the wind was crazy today, making this the coldest hike that I have done this year. It was really cold and windy on the ascent in Hieroglyphic Canyon, and on the ridgeline in saddles and whenever I wasn't shielded from the north wind. Oddly, the winds died down when I got to Peak 5057, and with the sunshine it was quite pleasant at the peak.

I started early and only saw one person before the petroglyphs, and didn't see anyone else until I saw a couple of instagrammers in Hieroglyphic Canyon on the way back.

I like the section of the ridgeline that I was on, so it was nice to do this one today even with the wind.

It is really, really green out there, which I would think will make for a good wildflower season.

I saw a few Dichelostemma capitatum along the Hieroglyphic Trail, but that was about it. It is very, very green out there.

It was a great day to hit Superstition. I started at Carney (wave cave) trail and went counter clockwise. I did a side excursion and to the three sisters and the 5057 summit. It was nice seeing a fair amount of people up there tackling the harder stuff. There was a fair amount of water. I wish I had brought my water filter, because I did run out. It was toward the end, so not a big deal.
