Re: LCR Big Canyon pumped hydro project

@RedRoxx44
I think society's attitudes have probably changed quite a bit since work started on Glen Canyon in the 1950's. Or maybe we just have better environmental lawyers now

LCR Big Canyon pumped hydro project

Seems highly unlikely that dams and pumped hydroelectric projects on the Little Colorado River and surrounding tribal lands could ever get approval, let alone constructed, but developers will apparently keep trying. On paper pumped hydro looks like a great way to time-shift solar and wind-generated ...

Re: Mindless chit chat

@Watauga Most of WCC isn't tight narrows, it's usually broad enough you could get to higher ground. If you avoid it any time "there's even a slight chance of rain in the area or upstream" then you've pretty much taken June - August off the calendar. But there are relatively few places to get in/out...

Fun with numbers: 1" of rain falling across all of AZ equals about 2 trillion gallons
(and if my math is wrong I'm sure someone will point it out)

Ha Ha I just looked up "ermahgerd", I had no idea! I've seen Ermahgerd Canyon on HAZ, figured it was just somebody's name. Pop culture is definitely not my strong suit

Re: Leo Canyon near Hellsgate (Tonto & Haigler Cks.)

@Copperstate Bear Flat and Big Ridge trails will get you to the head of Leo Canyon, but that by itself is a pretty stout hike. Adding bushwhack down into the rugged canyon to try and find the crash site would probably put you into a backpack trip. You’d probably also have to off-trail down into Hai...

Re: Rincon Peak (Happy Valley) Water

I hiked to Happy Valley saddle on 3/26 from the west side (Rincon Creek trail). Didn't spend a lot of time in the saddle but at the trail junction there was zero flowing water, I only saw 1 small stagnant pool under some tree roots. I didn't see any water on upper Rincon Creek trail either. Extremel...

Re: Snake Gaiters -worth it?

Turtleskins are $150+ but after a year of use with lots of offtrail bushwhack mine still look like new. I use 1.8mm Dyneema cord to cinch them down tight to my shoes, and even with the cord looping under the sole of the shoe and getting ground into the dirt with every step I've never had a cord brea...

Re: 4WD Recommendations

I wanted to hear people's thoughts on what works for them. I went through the same process you're going through, in the end I decided to avoid the big up front & long term costs of a more off-road capable vehicle and just keep driving my Subaru. With some modestly upgraded all terrain tires (plus d...

Re: Climbing helmet, harness, other

@Jim_H Just looked up your 2010 Owen-Spalding triplog, nice! Way back in 1999 I did the Direct Exum and descended O-S, one of my favorite climbing experiences. Stormed on us on the hike in the day before but we got incredibly lucky with a calm, sunny climbing day and no thunderstorms until after we...

Re: 10th Annual New Year's Day Peak Bag

Looks like a great hike but Regina is still having foot issues so we'll have to sit this one out. She'll use it as motivation to keep up the therapy.
