Re: one night in the Superstitions

The two hour limit on your driving limits you to the western Superstitions. A loop using Dutchman trail and Peralta trail from Peralta TH will fit your parameters, but all the western Superstitions are Sonoran desert, so meeting your criteria of "less-desert" is not possible. The Dutchman trail tend...

Re: Royal Arch Route Trip Coming Up...

You may want to call the backcountry office a few weeks before your trip and ask on whether they have any reports. I'm not sure the park service will admit to placing and leaving gear in the canyon, but amongst rangers with off time, the Royal Arch route seems fairly popular and in spring there is a...

That's why I recommended those triplogs. If it sounds above the level of your comfort, then I'd advise not to attempt it. Other options like Hank's route exist in accessing that area of Salome creek from the west side, but would seem to need a better 4WD vehicle than you have access to right now.

@Grasshopper
Hank, everyone who has posted a triplog on that trip did the bushwhack/swim from Salome creek up Workman creek and out the Hell Hole trail. None posted a GPS route. Some of Vaporman's pictures show the waterfall but not the climb itself.

Re: Any ideas / requests for scouting out canyon between copper & dupont near malicious gap [updated water for area q's]

I believe that from the campspot at end of hellhole trail, it is well documented that there is a nontechnical, though perhaps scary for some, scramble around a 30-40 ft cliff, as the major difficulty in reaching Salome creek. Having never done it myself, I cannot attest to its exact difficulty. You ...

Re: Any ideas / requests for scouting out canyon between copper & dupont near malicious gap [updated water for area q's]

Exploring the upper Salome Gorge has been on my todo list for a decade, but due to difficulty and access problems, will likely stay there. If you plan is the scramble/bushwhack down from Dupont to the canyon you will find water, but it is a hefty trip. The area is more easily accessed from the east,...

Re: Any ideas / requests for scouting out canyon between copper & dupont near malicious gap [updated water for area q's]

Workman is spring fed. It can slow to not much more than a trickle but I don't think it ever stops. Salome can similarly slow to a trickle, and get pretty swampy at times during the year. Rain will boost the flows for perhaps a few weeks after each rain. Not sure what either of those places have to ...

Re: Mogollon Rim, Payson suggestions.

For backpacking, much, if not all, of the Highline trail is good. Especially if you can setup a shuttle as many of the loop options involve poor trails or road hiking. It's slightly past season though so make sure you have the right gear.

Re: Any ideas / requests for scouting out canyon between copper & dupont near malicious gap?

I am under the impression that early settlers got some type of monetary incentive from the territorial government (later state government) from prospecting. The idea seems to have been that that it was the easy way to find minerals valuable to the AZ economy suitable for major mining operations to m...

Re: Superstitions - Dripping Springs Reliability

@xsproutx Dripping springs is just a drip and you'd have to rig up something to collect it, and it will take a long time (overnight) to likely collect enough to be substantive. Typical winter conditions make it so that there is some light flow down the canyon itself making the collection rigging un...

Re: SR 88 - Apache Trail

@herdbull
You can see the closure marked on AZ511 and refer people there for official information on road closures. Of course, that assumes people on facebook are willing to listen to reason and actually read and think for themselves...tread carefully.

Re: SR 88 - Apache Trail

For about 4-6 months after the rockslide it was closed at tortilla flats. Then the closure was changed to the top of FCH as the rest of the way to the top of Fish Creek Hill was cleared and reopened (I don't really think much clearing was needed.) It has been closed at the top of FCH for perhaps 1.5...

Re: Coconino NF proposes trailhead transit expansion

Care to explain? I am unfamiliar with the exploitation or detrimental impacts to you refer to, and kind of doubt that "Sedona" as a township, is exploiting the forest. Perhaps you have a beef with individual companies or entities? Sedona has many businesses which cater to tourism due to the nice sce...

And in certain places, such as Fossil Springs, I think the Forest service has demonstrated taking even further steps in terms of policies of preventing overuse.

Re: Coconino NF proposes trailhead transit expansion

@Chums: Managing forest access is another responsibility of the FS in addition to managing the forest usage. And the FS does have policies, such as stay limits, and group limits, at least, in many places. I'm glad they are considering alternative access means (e.g. shuttle service) rather than just ...

Re: Hammock Camping in the Mazatals

The Mazatzals are huge. For just your next trip, there are scattered remaining pine trees at the top saddle of the Barnhardt trail, a cluster of pines near Horse Camp seep, and some small scraggy trees near Chilson camp, all junipers if I recall. There are also some pine trees on Y-bar below the sad...

I believe I've seen several instances that refute the post you are referring to. Plus ADOT (az511) still shows the closure just after the marina (still well short of Reavis North access).

If you build it, they will come. When too many people come and behave badly, then you close it or restrict it. Surprised they didn't go with the restriction/permit option given the investment.

Re: Shake Tree Canyon 4x4 RD location

I think you are referring to 1438 to 1438B which gets you onto the ridge. The FR 415 extension of 1438 seems to be designated for closure under the proposed motor vehicle use plan but can always still be hiked as an exit route if you see a closure sign. Barnhardt rd is 419, which involves hiking up ...
