Royal Arch Route Trip Coming Up...

I've got permits to return to Royal Arch April 14-19. I'm excited to be heading back in to the canyon and back into see the Arch again... However, I'm a bit nervous about the drive in to Pasture Wash given the amount of snow that was up there recently. Anyone have a good idea of the road conditions?...

AZT Passage 17a Annual Maintenance Event

I subtitle this one "Catclaw Revenge" The Alamo Canyon Passage is classic Sonoran desert - rugged, remote and beautiful. Join the passage steward (me!), the Arizona Backpacking Club, in their mission to maintain this as one of the premier passages of the Arizona National Scenic Trail. This is a mult...

Re: AZT Total Elevation Gain

If you through-hike going northbound, the AEG is 113,088 feet. If you through-hike going southbound, the AEG is 113,537 feet. (I was surprised by how similar they are!) The start and finish are within 1000' of each other, so you'd have to come out about even. Of course, I've heard people swear that...

Re: Looking to set a record.

@SuperstitionGuy
Well - can't say for sure, but I have records of someone reported as 85 who section hiked it over 2 years. Another at 81. The oldest for "All at Once" is 76.

I hope I'm that badass when I'm 85. Or even half that badass.

Is that considered a bad word?

AZ Trail Maintenance Weekend Blue Ridge

A great deal of the AZT, was built through weekend work events. This event reprises that tradition in the cool pines of the Mogollon Ranger District. Work will involve general maintenance of the Arizona Trail as it climbs the ridge south of the Blue Ridge Campground. This well-built trail just needs...

Re: Arizona Trail Maintenance - Passage 17a

Just back from a wonderful week of hard work on the AZT up Highline way and I'm really looking forward to getting back to my desert roots. We're still trying to find 4wd support for the event, and for transportation of gates and cement out to the remote gates along 17a. Come on out and get your reve...

Arizona Trail Maintenance - Passage 17a

The Arizona Backpacking Club is sponsoring its annual maintenance event on Passage 17a in the heart of the Sonoran Desert. Because we've scheduled the event for Veterans Day weekend, we're going to get a little more ambitious with our plans and try to get deeper into the passage working on the South...

Re: Water on the AZT in the Fall

Some sources are better in spring, some in Fall. Its really going to vary from location to location. I was just up doing passages 27 and 28 and some perennial sources were bone dry while other drainages that weren't even mentioned on the water report were flowing nicely. I think this is because some...

Re: Gila Cliff Dwellings & Hot Springs

My experience from 2 years ago is that as long as you're on the floor of the Middle Fork, it seems largely untouched by fire. The floods, however, changed the area pretty dramatically - destroying portions of the trail and altering the stream course. However, its still one of the most beautiful area...

Re: Water caching for non-resident visitors

Water caching can make a trip much more enjoyable - however it can also set up a very dangerous dependence. If you plan to carry 3-4 liters of water per day as many of us desert hikers do as matter of course - then you can use cached water to change out skanky tank water if you end up with some or e...
