Re: Low-traffic swimming holes that still have water?

The reason I mention Lake Mohave is because, although its western shore is all in Arizona, it's virtually unknown to most Arizonans. With almost 200 beaches, there are plenty of places to camp and swim if you have a kayak or other type of boat. The water is clear, and is often an aqua blue color sim...

Re: overnight kayak Lake Powell?

@mfox Glad you had fun! It's a gorgeous stretch! Who did you use for backhaul? Wilderness, or Vermilion Cliffs Lodge? Post your trip report here: https://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=16091 @hikeaz Colorado River Discovery is out of business, and it's a good thing. They lost their contract to do ...

@sajor75
You have a variation of about 6000 feet, so you can't say it's all desert. Most hikes lead to pines eventually, and there are creeks.

Re: overnight kayak Lake Powell?

@ssk44 @mfox Agree with ssk44, except for the part about going below the dam. There is a serious problem with doing a "dam-down" to Lees Ferry in Glen Canyon. The problem I see is that you want to take a small child onto a river where the child will likely die of hypothermia within a few minutes af...

Re: Lower Colorado River kayaking Jan 25 & 26

@LowelllH
It's where the trailer park used to be, below Laguna Dam. However there's another place upriver from there we used this past November. I will try to get you some info when I'm on my laptop.

Re: SAMBA's PSA Du jour

@SAMBA Death-defying, NOT!! You can safely swim every rapid in Grand Canyon. I myself have swum out of the Ledge Hole at Lava Falls at a cfs of 29K, (that's a pretty high volume these days) and it wasn't all that scary. The main danger in flipping a boat in Grand Canyon is getting hit by the boat i...

Yeah, I wondered that at the time, figured it might be a spammer. On the other hand, the question was put in good English, and was quite specific. So, I decided to see what would happen. But, as we see, the guy never reappeared.

Re: Mess Kit

@Uide Most backpackers are using one big titanium mug you can cook in, and one spork. That's it. People don't generally carry mess kits these days. For a stove, you'll find that an isopropane canister fits inside of the mug, which goes with the MSR pocket rocket stove. But even lighter weight than ...

Re: Mindless weather chit chat

Up here in Flagstaff we've had more than an inch of rain this month. It's been raining every day since May 7th. We've had the thunderstorms, but also a few spates of steady rain. Chilly, too. Still down into the 30's every night. Good thing they do the graduation inside the Dome! The snow is once ag...

Re: Gila NF near Alma, NM / Mogollon mtns

@derpsquad I have a Falcon guidebook that has some amazing-looking loops in it, (written before all those fires.) There's also a backpacker map, I don't have it handy, that shows loops. Can't remember the publisher's name, but I bought it at REI. I just never got around to doing more than that one ...

Re: Gila NF near Alma, NM / Mogollon mtns

Due to there having been many big fires, and the fact that you're talking about going out there early in the season, I would call the ranger district to find out trail conditions. Having to negotiate hundreds of fallen trees can really take the fun out of a hike. I've hiked only the 25-mile Whitewat...

[ Garnet Peak Trail ] near Mount Laguna. PCT also, through the Laguna Mountain area. Much cooler up there than desert.
