Re: Backpacking close to Flagstaff

I was going to suggest the Kachina-Weatherford loop, and cache water at one end. At Shultz Pass if you start at Kachina TH, or at Kachina TH if you start at Shultz Pass. Problem right now would be lightning storms. Most people like to camp up in the Fremont saddle area, but that's not advisable righ...

Re: Mindless weather chit chat

I just heard there was a monumental flash flood in Grand Canyon on the 9th, affecting several river running parties, including both commercial and private. Hardest hit was at National Canyon, a commercial trip. They had to grab their PFDs and run for the boats. Other boaters coming down the next day...

Then there is when you get five inches of rain--the drops are five inches apart.

@Jim_H
It has been drier here in Flag, although at 4:30 a.m. or so it hailed and thundered a bit, and when I drove to work at 5 a.m. the streets were wet from the west side of town to mid-town, but not on the east side.

That car started out a lemon. Once a lemon.... Trade it in! New house, new car in the garage and a grass-fed organic hormone-free chicken in the pot!

No, you need to post it over on the nude hiking thread. That one has been neglected lately.

@hellothere
What Chumley said. Also, East Baldy Trail is close by. Springerville Ranger District Office has a nice booklet, free.

I haven't done this loop, would be interested but have a Grand Canyon backpack that same time frame. Hope you get some takers.

Mormon Lake has been dry. I suppose you're wondering if recent rains have affected it? If I go by there tomorrow I'll post.

Re: Mindless weather chit chat

Some crazy reports coming to me out of Flagstaff. I live there, but I'm in Minnesota right now. 4" of rain in a short time on east side, evacuations in Timberline area, quarter sized hail, flooding downtown, cars under water, etc. I called my landlady and she said everything ok at our place because ...

Long thunderstorm centered here in Flagstaff has now tapered off to a steady rain. It's been going on for a couple hours.

Looks like Havasu Creek flashed again today. Don't know about Diamond since it apparently broke the gauge.

Re: Havasupai Flash Flood July 2018

Downstream from Havasu Creek, Diamond Creek flashed yesterday on the Hualapai Reservation. Data page shows 4500 cfs, but also, the gauge seems to now be busted. Usual flow is about 3 or 4. The beach there at the Colorado River is an important take-out for Grand Canyon river trips, although not the o...

Interesting words, many of the older English, where there are consonants heard fore and aft, with vowels in the middle: sedge, grist, pack, etc.

Re: Mindless weather chit chat

A bit of rain in Flag midday. Then I went to NW Arizona, to Pearce Ferry. Very bad windstorm, with an enormous black cloud bank over the Grand Wash Cliffs. I decided a motel room would be the prudent and more comfortable choice, instead of a pup tent. So, back to Meadview I went. I have to go back t...

@lhalloran
I used to know Wendy when I lived in Eagar. And yes, Bear Creek is a good starting point. Lots of swimming holes, both up and downstream from there. Make sure your people have hiking poles, and shoes they can hike in wet. I can't emphasize poles enough.
