Re: Mindless weather chit chat

In NW Arizona, the Mohave Valley and across the river in Needles we are experiencing a slow soaking rain, which is very welcome. I'm holed up and very cozy here in my RV spot on the riverbank.

Exactly why "quilt" is on my wish list. I almost never zip my sleeping bag! It's a 15 degree Marmot Helium.

Re: Good places for beginner snowshoeing around Flagstaff

Up by Hart Prairie Road. I forget the FS number. Pull off 180 there, usually you can park there. Just start going. Just remember, if your right snowshoe steps on your left snowshoe, or vice versa, you may fall down. That's all you need to know. And bring poles.

I went to Saguaro East today. It seemed calm and orderly. A lot of cyclists, the usual.

I know you have your work cut out for you, but I hope you can find some respite for yourself. I saw your other post elsewhere. The caregiver also needs to take care of herself, and you'll find solace in doing an occasional hike. Don't be a stranger, though! And happy New Year!

Re: 2019 Hazolutions

2018 was special because of a new summer job, driving a bus down Diamond Creek Road, that's kind of fun. Also took a trip to Minnesota and Wisconsin which included paddling on the Mississippi. Did my first solo short backpacking trip in the Sierras. The big Kahuna was a 340-mile 17-day kayak trip do...

@rwstorm
Not a word about Eber Glendening, the other club founder, who actually showed up at that first Hutch's Pool hike, whereas Pete did not. Eber's efforts with the Bulletin and other things kept the club going. Just a small mention in that article would have been appropriate.

Re: 2018 Hazolutions

I worked all the time, but at least I got one bucket list thing done: Paddled my sea kayak in one continuous epic trip from Hoover Dam to the Mexican border (340 miles). (Yes, of course, had someone to shuttle us around 5 dams.) At some point I will post a trip log and photos. Otherwise, meh. Worked...

Yes, I'm not surprised. I snowbird in Needles, and so Grapevine isn't too far. Have been there a few times. I'll watch for the agaves next time!

Re: New Book: Chasing Centuries

@GeeEss This is so interesting! I will be interested in buying the book. The desert I live in is the Mojave, in the Tri-State area, which also has agave at certain elevations. I have to wonder if the ancients brought some to the area. There are loads of petroglyph sites around here. I found an inte...

Pretty difficult to do if you get sick of trail mix, peanut butter and energy bars after about three bites. I couldn't do it. But there is more than one way to skin a cat. It sure would be easier if you didn't have to cook.

Re: SPOT 2

The one we had for the 340-mile lower Colorado River trip failed after about 10 days of every-day, all-day use. It would no longer charge up. The company was good about overnighting a replacement, trusting my friend to send the broken one back. But my friend said when his contract is up, he's buying...

Re: delorme inreach

@joebartels Of note, a Spot device which has two-way texting option was in use by my friend on our recent 340-mile kayak trip down the lower Colorado River. After more than a week of use it developed a problem: it would no longer charge up. It also had to be duct-taped against places where it was g...

I haven't actually hiked that section, but with your description, I might actually like it, especially on a bicycle. I do love big sky and wide views.

And I've been so good lately! Haven't been bugging people about "it's" or "lightening," etc. etc. But you gave me an "in" to correct your spelling! It just warmed the cockles of my heart!

As for the trail, I'm with Chums. Meh.

Maybe, just maybe because you misspelled it? It's "dearth."
