Re: Woodbury Fire - Superstition Wilderness

I remember some reports that they had crews on the ground backfiring from the ranch.

Re: Woodbury Fire - Superstition Wilderness

@nonot
I heard from a FS employee who has been to Woodbury TH area that the grass is already coming back in that area. This is consistent with what we saw a couple of weeks after the Sunflower Fire. Within a very short time, life goes on.

@ALMAL
I was there one Thanksgiving and the ground looked like that. Went back on New Years and there wasn't an apple to be seen. Some fat deer and bears probably tho.

Re: Woodbury Fire - Superstition Wilderness

@mazatzal
Looks like a toss-up as to whether it got the one at Rogers Trough TH. So far it's looking like Reavis Ranch is out of the path, but way too close for comfort. It would be a huge shame to lose that.

Re: Coldwater Fire - Mogollon Rim Ranger District

I came by the fire on 87 this afternoon, saw a FS crew walking along the highway with a drip torch. Seems to be burning the pine needles and not much else. Hope it gets the underbrush and doghair pine.

I just heard that it is expected to burn through Roger's Trough TH, and ??? where else. I hope they do all they can to protect Reavis Ranch.

@mooseonthetrail
Mid-March, give or take a couple of weeks based on the recent trend. Mid-March was a bit early this year, pretty late last year.

Re: Accessing trail by car for sister of Army vet hiker

@SharonWaters
If you're there on a weekend hitching is a possibility, on a weekday finding an angel to pick you up would be the best bet. There is traffic on that road--the TH is just outside a large scout camp facility--so a ride is a possibility.

Re: Accessing trail by car for sister of Army vet hiker

Pine, AZ would be an ideal location to connect. There is a nice trailhead just off the highway, and by then he'll be wanting a day or two off the trail, and Pine a is a great place for that as well. As mentioned above there are several access points going east (trail-north) from Pine where you could...

Re: Cabin Loop

Just passing this along in case anyone is interested. The Forest Service Mogollon Rim District Recreation folks would like to improve the Cabin Loop Trails. Funding and the bureaucracy are constant challenges but it's a worthy cause and there are some limited resources available to make it happen. O...

I've bought my last couple pair of Lowa Trekkers from GSA Boots, around $230, versus over $300 local stores and not much less online.

We met an AZT through-hiker on passage 28 yesterday who said the water at the crossing above the dam was mid-calf deep and very cold.
