Re: Construction by Humphreys Peak Trailhead

It's part of the Arizona Snowbowl master plan. I believe the Aspen Loop portion is for a new parking lot below the current lot. They will be adding some additional infrastructure to accommodate growth. The changes are all occurring within the FS-permitted boundary for the ski area. https://www.snowb...

Re: Kachina Wilderness Winter Permits (Mt Humphrey's etc)

Maybe the FS will revisit other old forest orders that don't make any sense anymore ... like bald eagle nesting closure areas, for example. The species has fully recovered from its endangered status when such closures were implemented and there are now healthy, breeding pairs all over the state, tot...

Indeed, I find it odd when people pronounce it Tem-peeeee, like there's urine all over it!

Re: How much water is required for it to be a "Pond", or a "Lake"?

While we're here solving world peace, can we also designate the differences between a Mountain (and Mount), Hill, Peak, Butte, and Mesa? I mean, how can Camelback be a mountain, but Piestewa a peak. Tempe Butte, but Tumamoc Hill?

And where do knolls fit in? ](*,)

if who can throw a rock across it? Joe Montana or Stuart Smalley? Even that definition is highly subjective!

Re: How much water is required for it to be a "Pond", or a "Lake"?

@AZClaimjumper I'd say your definition is as good as any. :) The technical distinction between a pond and a lake has not been universally standardized. Limnologists and freshwater biologists have proposed formal definitions for pond, in part to include 'bodies of water where light penetrates to the...

I just liked that you and your wife were camping and the cops told you they were about to take down some drug runners and there might be a shootout and whatever and you figured it was a good idea to just stay there and see what happened!

Re: What's in your first aid kit?

As my son said when I used it on him, “What genius came up with this magic?” Some crafty Danes! Luckily they did a clinical trial in 1984 to prove its effectiveness and concluded: As the principle of the vacuum extractor is quite simple and logical - prompt removal of the poison through the way it ...

Re: RS Route + Triplog

I'm not sure that I understand the logic behind beginning a triplog from recorded track in RS, editing the track prior to posting, and then having to manually change all the triplog stats to match the edited track. One of the best features of using a RS track as the basis for your triplog is to have...

Re: Amphitheater TH, Santa Rita Mts

It's the "Amphitheater and Nature Trail" and it's on the west side of the road. The Nature Trail is on HAZ. There is no trail heading east from the Nature Trail parking area. You will want to take the Bog Springs Trail or Kent Springs Trail or you can combine Rogers Rock and Pipeline . Four options ...

The east side is open now from Roosevelt to Apache Lake Marina. According to the map, the closure does not allow access to the Reavis north trailhead yet.

Re: State Route 88 - Apache Trail closed

@AZLumberjack That doesn't surprise me at all. If I were a betting man, I would put my money on ADOT working on the east side repairs to make access to Apache Lake possible from Roosevelt. I fear that Fish Creek Hill, on the other hand, may never open. Clearing the road from the landslide is no big...
