Re: 2021 Fire Season

I'm interested in the outcome of the investigation as to the source of this fire. Clear weather pretty much eliminates a natural start, but this isn't an area that would be normal to camp or build a fire. It's on a steep slope and appears to be several hundred feet above the Four Springs trail. Hike...

Anymore updates about this fire Wildfire Update: The Madera fire is still active and being managed on the Coronado. Resources have hiked in this morning, (October 21st), and have confirmed that containment line has held through the night. The fire is still approximately 9 acres in size. Cause of ig...

Re: Coconino NF proposes trailhead transit expansion

@nonot Fossil Creek was given a specific Wild & Scenic River designation specifically to be managed for recreational use. The designation required the forest service to establish a management plan. This is unique to Fossil Creek and not applicable elsewhere on the forest. Neither the Red Rock Secre...

Re: 2021 Fire Season

CNF posted an update. It's up to 9 acres.
Seems to be expected fire behavior for October temperatures after a summer of good rain on the mountain.

Re: Coconino NF proposes trailhead transit expansion

Similar to how the FS manages fire, this policy seems focused on protecting the private property and quality of life of those who reside adjacent to the forest. Perhaps if the Forest Service implemented policies that protected the forest itself from the damage of overuse then there wouldn't be so mu...

Re: "Turkey" Benchmark by Rincon Peak

Hi @BubbaJuice :welcome: A quick search here doesn't show any previous mention of Turkey BM or Turkey Benchmark, and there are no routes posted in that area. See https://hikearizona.com/map.php?QX=10136 As you note, it doesn't look terribly difficult to get to (hahaha, famous last words!) but it is ...

This is a literary "cartoon". So I'll put it here. Friends, family, followers—gather whatever posts you possess of your pets or fancy latte art, and lay them at the altar of my nascent wilderness infatuation. I demand a sacrifice! There is a new force dominating your social media, clad in breathable...

This totally not-monsoon-related weather system that will somehow be credited to monsoon rainfall totals anyway has brought to our state the first touch of winter. The San Francisco Peaks have just a touch of snow across the highest peaks this morning, and a larger swath of the White Mountains have ...

Re: Hiking vehicles

The money quote from the sheriff Black Bear Pass is an extremely dangerous road & should only be driven by experienced off-road drivers in appropriate vehicles. Legally, a 16yr-old who got his DL hours prior, may try to drive the pass in grandma's 80’s sedan. That doesn’t mean it’s safe." ... a conc...
