Re: Butte named for legendary Canyon hiker

One wonders how many "non-fanatics" there were. Humble people who climbed for their own satisfaction without any desire for accolades or recognition. Or how many who may have made ascents long before pioneer settlers arrived or records of such things were ever enshrined on paper.

@ShatteredArm
There's a whole lot of private property at the east end that I think they'll work on long before they consider anything on the west end.

Re: 2021 Fire Season

Backbone is up to 1200 acres. Their plan is to try to keep it west of Fossil Creek so it doesn't threaten Pine/Strawberry. If the powerlines don't create a break, how far north it goes is anybody's guess.

Well, you seem to ask questions about where you can or can't get your rig to, so that's indicative of at least a semiconscious understanding that the vehicle has some limitations. :app:

Re: Aravaipa Klondyke road closed for Pinnacle Fire

@PrestonSands We’ve had some atypical weather with afternoon storms moving straight west and collapsing. The outflows have certainly not been helpful.

Re: Aravaipa Klondyke road closed for Pinnacle Fire

It seems unusual for there to be much growth in a wildfire in this state that moves from west to east. Especially in this case where that also features typography that isn't typically ideal for uncontrollable fire growth (downhill).

A 38-foot RV pulling a sedan became stuck on Lime Creek Road for about a week north of Durango in the San Juan Mountains. https://www.durangoherald.com/articles/rv-is-free-after-spending-a-week-stuck-on-lime-creek-road/ The RV sat precariously on the edge of the road, with about a 400-foot drop to t...

Re: Mindless chit chat

@hikeaz Well, except for that one time when Dr. Cerveny went on KTAR and announced that "This year, we're going to become Seattle" :lol: he's generally accurate and following the established science, whereby the average start date over the past 30 years has been July 6th. But, Let's Go June 15! Yay.

Mercifully, the National Weather Service has announced the arrival of the North American Monsoon. Expect higher humidity, moderating temperatures, heavy rain, and rapidly improving wildfire conditions. It all starts today! :y:

Maybe royally effing up and destroying a mountain for no valid reason will open a discussion about changing tactics for future fires (in other states that still have unburned terrain).

Even somewhat obscured by the Ancha, the bright red glow of fire was easily visible from 70 miles away along the Mogollon Rim last night. It looked enormous.

@RedRoxx44 NWS PHX is reporting that the Telegraph Fire was extremely active overnight and has created a very visible smoke plume east of Phoenix. That could be the same smoke you're seeing over the Catalinas from GV. https://cdn.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES16/ABI/SECTOR/psw/GEOCOLOR/20211651411_GOES1...

Re: 2021 Fire Season

The "Pinnacle Fire" is burning in the Santa Teresa mountains. As a remote wilderness with few "values" to protect, I expect the management strategy to include a whole lot of letting it burn. :cry:
