Re: New forest thinning contract awarded

This CF just keeps on giving. And that does not stand for Coconino Forest. The U.S. Forest Service has abruptly canceled its contract process for the second phase of the Four Forest Restoration Initiative. It throws the next steps of the large-scale thinning project into a state of uncertainty. http...

Re: Tent pole repair

@tibber Do you mean that the shock cord that holds all the poles together broke? And REI won't replace it for free? :x I had this happen to my tent years ago. I think sometimes you just never know how old the cord is. Poles and pole sets may be purchased from the tent manufacturer years before matc...

Re: I-17

@rustyshackleford135 There's probably a breaking point somewhere (and that point isn't the same for everybody) but I think that there are examples of other congested routes in America that lead away from population centers that are far more congested than I-17 and people still choose to sit in traf...

Re: Proposed Permanent Closure to Recreational Shooting - CNF

I read this last week and perhaps one of the folks here who is more familiar with Arizona's firearm laws can reply. This proposal suggests prohibiting shooting within 1/4 mile of both sides of forest roads (valid hunting excepted). Isn't it already illegal to discharge a firearm within 1/4 mile of a...

How is it that Arizona's own staircase gem has received so little love on HAZ when it's so insanely overpopular on the instaticbook? :-k

Famous Haiku Stairs to be destroyed

In the name of safety. Of course. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9982977/Honolulu-council-destroy-Hawaiis-Stairway-Heaven-concerns-dangerous.html Officials in Honolulu planning to destroy a popular hiking trail and Instagram-worthy site that draws thousands of visitors each year, arguing t...

Re: Shake Tree Canyon 4x4 RD location

The FR 415 extension of 1438 seems to be designated for closure under the proposed motor vehicle use plan Looks like a modified option C was chosen and both are marked as a "motorized trail". Until the map is printed it doesn't take effect, but from how I'm reading the final decision, both will rem...

Re: Shake Tree Canyon 4x4 RD location

I can't confirm there are signs posted anywhere along the route, but if you mean the bottom of STC (the top is in the wilderness and has no road access) then 415 takes you onto Shake Ridge but leaves more uphill hiking to get to the wilderness boundary (and may not be accessible due to the ranch whe...

A good example of how firm sand liquifies when agitated. I've experienced this in northern Arizona.

Fingers crossed Hope you did ok. Radar estimates of a swath of 10+" across central Jersey to southwestern CT, the first ever flash flood emergency in NYC, an all-time record of 3.15" of rain in one hour in Central Park (breaking the old record of 1.94" set just 10 days ago!), and some astonishing p...

Re: Mindless chit chat

Not quite how it was predicted but there’s a conveyor belt of storms training right down I-10 into the airport that will probably make the official gauge look pretty good. It’s a pretty narrow band for now though.

Re: Mindless chit chat

But will it really? Well so far, the actual map doesn't come close to resembling the forecast. There's still time and looks like there may be some activity across the valley today or tonight. But except for a few select spots I think Nora 2.0 has been a bit of a disappointment. (v1 in 1997 was disa...

Re: Union wants to close some trails because "ermagherd so warm"

Heat-related injuries do not have to be heat-caused. Nor do dehydration and exhaustion, clearly. I can speculate on any number of other factors that could contribute to these outcomes. But I won't.
