Re: Kachina Wilderness Winter Permits (Mt Humphrey's etc)

https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/coconino/news-events/?cid=FSEPRD672382 Initially the USFS did not have this up on their own website, but it was put up yesterday after I sent an email inquiring about it on the 15th. I checked and it was not there earlier in the day, despite being dated to the 11th. It...

Re: Hikers left 'uncomfortable' after encountering man jogging in pink thong

Isn't the Mirror one of those UK garbage rags that reports on what the Queen did that made Princess Flowerpuff drop her tea cup? My guess is the uncomfortable Aussie "hikers" were not in the shape that this man is. Mocking others is a great way to feel better about one's self. This is likely why thi...

Re: Amphitheater TH, Santa Rita Mts

I'm going to assume that you two are not deliberately misinterpreting my statement and are in fact confusing the map having a correction for magnetic north for what I was talking about, and not noting that the north points down, where south typically is. The standard "northern hemisphere-centric" me...

Re: Amphitheater TH, Santa Rita Mts

https://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=635987 "B" is this parking area I asked about, and the trail from the east side of the road is shown on this map as a 0.6 mile segment. Toddak did this in the photo I linked. This must be the lesser known lower TH for Bog or Kent Springs Trails. Please note, tha...

Amphitheater TH, Santa Rita Mts

Google Maps shows a trailhead on the Madera Canyon Road and calls it the Amphitheater Trailhead. I believe I stopped to inspect it in June of 2018 and I think on the east side of the road a trail or two leaves and ascends to Florida Saddle and the Crest Trail. However, we do not have any hikes liste...

Re: Ike's

While I can't comment on the 2014 fire, lighting along roads is normal for fire management, especially when establishing a perimeter. Since I highly doubt you were within the closure area, you would have observed them lightning along the external areas doing that. This is essentially the exact same ...

Ike's

https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/6475/ North Rim, Powell Plateau Area, with some trails like North Bass closed. Mostly I am posting for curious and interested parties, as it is late in the season and few are likely to venture to this area to hike between now and the HWY 67 road closure. That said, ...

Re: South Rim Photo Location Help

Yup, Desert view, I was just there. Also, the river and distinct super group formation is visible near the bottom. It looks like you went out past the railing, which I also did, to a rocky outcropping beyond the normal viewing area. It is very easy to access that area today. I also went out there an...

Re: Mindless weather chit chat

Yeah, a 168 hour QPF is typically not all that reliable, but we shall see. Even with a higher level of accuracy for a Pacific Low in January that will affect the Sierra Nevada, there tends to be a lot of variation over that time frame, as you know, Toddy. The models haven't been very reliable for th...

Re: Good Long Day Hike In The Grand Canyon

I am of the school of thought that the best views are often obtained from the viewpoints on the rim. That said, unless these are really hardcore people to truly enjoy the canyon as the canyon and not as a hike, I would do less. I should be up there over the next week or so and my goal is to just do ...

Re: Museum Fire

This was long over due. I wonder how it might affect future plans, since this could affect the logger's insurance. When I hiked Mount Elden last week I could see a line of dead trees where the fire came up the ridge and met the sunset trail. That area was left fairly dense. It'll be interesting to s...

Re: Water filters/purifiers

@AZClaimjumper It is an MSR ceramic and charcoal filter. Not 100% sure about the specific model, but it is an MSR. I liked it back when I used it extensively in Colorado, California, New Mexico and Wyoming, packing in to hike or scramble mountains, and while doing a 5 day trip in the Gila. It serve...

Re: Carry Water while hiking?

Yes, I carried my filter both for the obvious: backpacking I did between 2008 and 2012, and for some day hikes both with water sources, and because I would exhaust my supplies on the long hike. The one I recall is Catalina SP to Mt Lemmon, and back. I can't recall on other shorter day hikes, but I m...

Re: River Fire

I'm curious, do the top of these mesas look anything like those near I-17 and Sunset Point? I'm not familiar with this area at all, but being nearby and similar in elevation, I thought perhaps they had that similar desert scrub vegetation of exotic oak grass that turns golden yellow by Summer and so...

Re: Coconino Rim - AZT #36, AZ

Thanks. I might drive near parts of that, or section 35, since the views are what I am after if I can't hike it. The views off the Coconino Rim look enjoyable, if I can hike it.
