Re: Mindless weather chit chat

Had rain south of here yesterday, enough to run in the streets, and two evenings of beautiful sunsets and clouds and some notable humidity. Certainly monsoon like but not gaining traction with the weather folks. Fires near Sonoita and one near the Hellsgate north of Nogales. Thunder yesterday evenin...

Re: Tucson backpacking

Galiuros are the best for some nice backpacking loops without crowds if you avoid hunting season. FYI, make sure and bear proof your food. They just relocated another black bear to there from south of here that was getting into peoples garbage near Rio Rico I think. So it's habituated to "people" fo...

Re: Gila NF near Alma, NM / Mogollon mtns

"Hiking New Mexico's Gila Wilderness" is the Falcon guide by Cunningham and Burke. It's pretty good but as has been said pre- fire. I hiked a few years back in the Whitewater Baldy, Redstone area that was heavily impacted by fire. Besides being ugly in part, some rough trail conditions and lots of d...

Re: Backpacking supes solo, 1st time

You will probably do fine as long as you don't let your mind mess with you and just relax and enjoy. I've hiked and backpacked and driven many a lonely dirt road solo. It's not a lot of people's cup of tea but I thrive on the areas I go that I see no one, sometimes for days. It's the most free I hav...

Crater area is cool, lots of areas adjacent to DVNP that are pretty darn neat, and fortunately not overrun nor featured on Instagram.

Re: Mindless weather chit chat

Yeah! just back in. 4wd needed almost driving out of my development and on the interstate as well as a side road or two. 3 extrications I assisted with, a volkswagen beetle, a Chevy Cruze? ; and a blue FJ, ADOT guy and his truck and me to get a UPS truck back on the road that had slid off. That thin...

Re: Mindless weather chit chat

Snowing here right now but has rained at least half the night so too wet to stick and probably won't get that cold. Deciding between Nogales, Oracle, Benson areas to travel to. Feeling lazy so might head to closest easiest destination. Shows what I know, starting to stick and absolutely huge fluffy ...

Re: Hiking vehicles

I still don't quite like the electronic lockers, got mixed messages on mostly releasing the locker. Push the button and the locker light would still be lit, sometimes had to stop, slowly creep forward or back to get it to release. Getting into and out of 4-lo is going somewhat better now that is has...

Yes, many morons in the world. Also you could contact one of the local caving grottos in Phoenix, CAG, members have done multi site clean ups usually using a wet sandblaster type thing but I am sure use other things. They have done multiple clean ups in Peppersauce, a loosing battle IMO, but a worth...

Re: looking for a challenging multi-day backpack trip in S. AZ

Then you should consider going into the Galiuros on the Tortilla trail, at the Garden water up then hike to Pipestem and up that to the https://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=16546. There is usually a big pool of water up Pipestem, unless rain nothing on the ridgeline. Follow the West Divide past R...

Re: looking for a challenging multi-day backpack trip in S. AZ

The Galiuros can get snow and a lot of it under the right conditions. Just check the weather of course. And take good cold weather gear, the Garden can be a cold air sink in Feb.

Re: Gila Wilderness Backpacking in Spring

Years ago did a Turkey Creek, Granny Mtn, Gila River loop that was pretty nice. Trail was a bit vague on Granny mtn, Side trip up or down Turkey with a day pack is recommended ( above the hot springs, but that area is nice too). According to guide book about 46 miles recommended 6-8 days but I think...

Continue to try to keep in shape, and really try to be a kinder, better person than I have been in the past. Enjoy all my hikes, backpacks, be they little or grand. Return to old haunts, put some footprints in new territory. Prepare for my upcoming being put out to pasture, so to speak. Enjoy the wi...

Re: Hiking vehicles

Well, the FJ is having some sort of issue, hopefully will be diagnosed in a week or two. Probably rear drive shaft, toyota has an old bulletin on that. However maybe clutch or an idler bearing issue or both. Took it to Parashant but I was worried enough had a clutch kit I purchased a while back and ...

Re: What do you do for a living??

If all goes well I will be retired by Nov 1, 2019. Then look out!! Actually I plan to join the local historical society, and take some community college classes on Archeology and Geology so I can be a little more cognizant of my surroundings. But not if it interferes with the hiking! And, I would li...

Friggin hail shredded my gazebo mesh covering. Oh well another project for the spring. I'll have to take a shovel to the front yard tomorrow too. Got some pics tho!
