Re: Mess Kit

I use a Talenti Gelato jar and a wooden spoon. The same jar and spoon lasted throughout my PCT hike last year and the few times I've been out this year.

That's a good question. Also, isn't it K2. I'm almost certain the mountain is named after the skis...

Re: Mindless weather chit chat

It’s May 12 and raining in many locations. I won’t complain. A few stations broke their all time rainfall records for the entire month of May with the single day of rain yesterday. Hopefully It will help keep fires at bay this spring/summer. On May 6th, the NE side of Deem Hills burned. The next da...

Fixed it.

Yeah, this is just bizarre. I'm completely baffled how everyone in the group ran out of water by the top. Very strange, very sad.

Re: Accessing trail by car for sister of Army vet hiker

Isn't Pine to Washington Park about 17 miles? I don't think there's a good 10 mile or less stretch for you to join your brother on with ride service except maybe up near Flagstaff. So I think meeting him and walking a few miles or staying with him on an off day would be best.

If you're on the rim around Cabin Loop, just go uphill.

@Tough_Boots
Well there really is no tread from General Springs cabin east. I think most just follow FR300, but that's not the trail now is it? Following the blazes (diamond metal on trees) is not easy.

DixieFlyer brings up a good point. For the eTrex 20x, the limit is 200 tracks, 10,000 track points. eTrex 20x specs

Re: Annoying Garmin problem

I've heard of problems with Garmin seeing files if the file date is earlier than the previous time the Garmin unit noticed files (read, earlier than the last time it was turned on.) You may just try touching the file to up the date.

Re: delorme inreach

@CannondaleKid
Yeah, @chumley confused me (don't go there...). I read "two satellites are at the same altitude," as to each other, not to the Direct TV satellite as I believe he meant. I thought the Iridium satellites were geostationary but maybe I'm mixing that up with GPS which I know are.

Really, what does altitude have to do with making a satellite's orbit geostationary?

Do you mean a Garmin InReach? As far as I know, Spot's don't have two-way communication, though there may be a Sat phone model.
