Re: Fires along Superstition Ridgeline

@AZLumberjack
It was closed when they closed for Covid and then it was closed when they closed the entire Tonto for fire danger.

Re: Where were you??

I was on my Honeymoon. We were on our way to Yellowstone NP and had stopped for the night in Provo, UT. Got up in the morning and turned on the tv in the hotel while we were having coffee. The first one had hit, so we watched and then we saw the 2nd one go in. Needless to say, we didn't get an early...

Re: Hanging Up The Spurs

My guess is that I'll be hanging up the ropes at least, by the time I'm 60. The knees just won't be able to handle the kind of abuse that comes with canyons any longer. That means if I start back into them soon, I'll have about 2 years left. Covid has really thrown a loop into that activity right no...

Re: Blue Range Primitive Area - Linking Dutch Blue Creek with Bear Mtn

@hikeaz I think it’s largely a factor of population proximity. Tonto has to spend all their resources on picking up trash and preventing people from driving all over the place and crowd control along the salt river corridor whereas there are not 5 million people within an hour’s drive of the Apache...

Honestly, when I first heard that term, the sex of a baby didn't even occur to me. I think the whole concept is ridiculous actually, especially during a Pandemic. Hey! Let's make sure the new Mom has to go through Covid 19 too!

Re: Mt. Whitney Alternative

I hope the fires die down before your trip. Last time there was a bad fire in Cali, I was in Colorado and it sucked for air quality as well. Utah was horrid and I was on the east side. Even I had a hard time breathing and got pretty sick from all of it. Spent a lot of time in my car, really sick. Tw...

Re: No Need to Clean/Disinfect Hydration Bladders

I always carry an extra bottle of some kind in addition to my bladder. I use the bottle to mix electrolyte drinks since I won't use anything but water in my bladder.

Pretty much how I feel about camera batteries too. Ask a camera repair shop what the number 1 reason for camera breakage or failure is. I pay too much for cameras to possibly ruin them with after market batteries.

Re: how do you clean/disenfect your hydration pack?

@rayhuston I do something very similar and I don't put anything in that bladder but water. I take the Bite Valve apart and clean it. I flush and wipe out my bladder with hot water, then after I get as much of the hot water out as possible, I hang it with a masked tape roll jammed in the opening to ...

I do share other's photos on that Face account occasionally, but it's just to get a Fauna ID and I try to ask first. I agree with you though Todd although I understand that once I put up a Photo on the Internet, I'm taking a chance of where that Photo ends up and what is done with it after it gets t...

Re: Fires along Superstition Ridgeline

@chumley Right, it's wilderness and no structures, so let it burn. Doesn't matter that all the Saguaros it kills will never be replaced. You've been calling that correctly and it's sad. But I guess there was lightning way back before we started suppressing, even in the desert, so it is what it is.

That heavy rain went right between us, we needed to be closer to east Papago Park. I'm west of Papago just 1 mile and we only got about 3/10 here too. 44th to 56th St from Camelback to Van Buren was the heavy stuff I guess.

What is going on with all the fires. Going up the Beeline just before Sunrise and the only mountain you could see was Four Peaks. The whole valley and all the way to 188 was smoky. As I was going by Bush Highway, there was another fire, south of the Beeline and East of Bush Highway. Looked to be a l...

I saw them the other night too. I'm not sure what they would be marking, if I recall, it's not a high point there.

@DixieFlyer Osprey must have changed who makes them. I bought my first Osprey in 2012 and it leaked from a defect within a year, so they sent me another. I'm still using that one, so it's been over 7 years. You used to be able to "turn" the valve itself to shut it off, I guess they don't work that ...

Might I suggest for her first backpack trip, that you take her somewhere that you're familiar with? Most WCC trails are steep, rocky and can be loose, so if you ever want her to go again, I'd pick somewhere with better trails. Just a thought. The only one I would suggest is West Clear Creek Trail ou...

They are not showing it on the Inciweb and from the looks yesterday morning, it must be contained or mostly out. All the smoke was further down the Beeline towards Payson and there was no "glow" anywhere. Both NB lanes are open as of yesterday with no signage or anything that would give clues that t...

@SpiderLegs
I had the opposite apparently. I was soaking wet from descending a hill and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Some of that was from effort, but it was apparent early on that the area had gotten some rain probably the day before. More Humid than Phoenix for sure!
