Re: Camping prohibited near Payson area streams

That used to be some of my favorite camping spots, but the last few years I knew the jig was up. Glad I got to enjoy it while I could. Sadly others couldn't and I saw evidence of the worst that campers can throw at a camping area. One spot had been fenced off with split rail, someone took apart the ...

May have to add this to my list. Sounds fun and Pima Canyon is turning into one of my favorite spots to explore since I moved here.

Thrift Books

Stumbled across a really good resource if looking for used hiking books, Thrift Books (www.thriftbooks.com). Their business model is that they cull all the books from thrift stores across the country looking for the best books and then sell most of them for $3.79. So far I've picked up some out of p...

Re: Snake Gaiters -worth it?

I don't worry about snakes, I'll take my chances. But after a killer bee attack a few years ago I'm pretty jumpy still if I see anything yellow fly past my head.

Re: Snake Gaiters -worth it?

Unless something has changed, not a single person on this website has been bitten that I know of since 1996 when HAZ started. Plus we tend to be the hikers that go off trail, on seldom used trails or generally bushwhack around the state. If anyone was going to get bit, it would be from our ranks. Wh...

iPhone or Samsung?

My 6 year old iPhone 5 is starting to show it's age and I need to shop for a new phone. Not an Apple fanboy, but most of the products around our house seem to be Apple. But open to change. This will honestly be the first smartphone I've ever shopped for, every other phone I've had I inherited or had...

So I guess the guys that work the mine may have itchier trigger fingers the next time someone drops in from peak #4 after doing a MotherLode.

Re: 2019 Hazolutions

Right now my resolution is to never take good health for granted ever again. After my GC trip in late October I was in great shape after a week or so lay off. Was able to snag a Strava KOM on my local training climb the first week of November, then did a short race on Thanksgiving where I felt prett...

Re: Pete Cowgill

Wow, glad to see he's still alive. Used to man the counter at a video store in the mid-80's and his family lived close by. Would see his daughter all the time and see him occasionally. Unfortunately wasn't into outdoor stuff back then and never had the opportunity to chat with him about anything oth...

@azbackpackr - Yep, had some family business that required a more watchful eye. Easier to keep an eye on things 5 minutes vs. 90 minutes.

Re: To hide, or not to hide?

@joebartels - Right now I like the current system. If I'm doing 3 miles around my house on the social trails, I keep it hidden. But again, since moving to Tucson I do like seeing what people are doing around here for their workout hikes. Helped me find a few "go-to" trails within 15 minutes of my h...

Re: The 2019!! Cyclical totals discussion thread.

It's the beginning of December and I have just logged my final trip log of the year. Was diagnosed with full blown pneumonia yesterday and I can't do anything until I get my follow up chest X-ray the first week of January. Even then it appears that this has wiped out all my plans for desert peaks th...

Do these incidents happen often? They don't, right?
Nope, this website tends to attract a lot of people that go off trail and to places that the general public will never go to. In the 22 years HAZ has been around nobody here has been bit.

Re: To hide, or not to hide?

If I do a training hike or run generally I just hide it, unless something of interest popped up while I was out. Plus I use HAZ as my way of tracking overall mileage and AEG. I can look back over the years to see what kind of training I was doing leading up to a big hike or trail race so I know what...

Re: Recommended hikes to train for Phantom Ranch hike?

Where in Arizona? Used to teach a class on how to train for big hikes like the GC and have a short list of favorites. Concur with Mt Kimball and Mt Wrightson in the Tucson area. Mt Ord northeast of Phoenix was where I used to send my students. Hiking under load on shorter stuff like Pusch Peak in Tu...

I'm in NW Tucson and have seen 1-2 month since moving here over the summer. Saw one while out walking the dogs in my neighborhood and it had a mouthful of bird and leaving behind a trail of feathers.

I was a sales guy selling software and direct mail when I first landed on HAZ 6 years ago. Now have done a full 180 and am a manager/HR person for a company that provides care taking services to individuals with developmental disabilities. Huge cut in pay, but much more fulfilling than selling stuff...

Re: City high points

Barrett and I did the high point of Phoenix. With all of the annexation they've done, it was up near Anthem. A tough 4X4 approach to a dull, non-descript mountain.

For a challenge, do the high point of Tolleson, it's the Circle K parking lot off of 83rd Avenue and I-10.
