Re: Washout on Barnhart?

@Sredfield There was one section of trail that was washed out and I had to navigate some boulders/rocks that was a little skectchy near the 2.5 mile mark or so, but not too bad. I'll also say that since I usually am solo, I'm extra cautious with anything remotely sketchy so I assign it higher point...

In response to the good news, Tonto has asked Coconino National Forest to keep the area closed until 2048.

Re: The Scourge of the Americas arrived earlier than Thought

An interesting find, def turns some thing upside down in the study of the early inhabitants of this continent. Although, as the article pointed out, there has been evidence now for several decades that the Bearing Strait theory and mass immigration theory over a now submerged land bridge may have be...

Re: Union wants to close some trails because "ermagherd so warm"

To bring it back to valley, why couldn’t they just make camelback open to locals only from June 1 to Sept. 1 every year? Or any city park for that matter? The state parks charge extra for out of state visitors. Why couldn’t a city limit non resident use of their parks for safety during summer months...

Re: Union wants to close some trails because "ermagherd so warm"

@nonot My obvious disagreement with closures or even limited access to heat is that these policies and practices always seem to miss their mark, no matter the intentions. Its usually the people not calling for rescues and usually the people most capable of recreating in extreme heat etc that are hu...

Until you learn how to properly use the quote feature and reply with less than 5,000 words, I am not responding.

Re: Union wants to close some trails because "ermagherd so warm"

@Canyonram Ok in the last week you have accused me of being a big game hunter trolling forums to find trophy sheep and now the "young testosterone and adrenalin-fueled male" comment. Do you even read my triplogs bro? Or are you just a long winded forum lurker? First of all, look at the deaths in th...

Re: Union wants to close some trails because "ermagherd so warm"

I think sometimes when people argue something is a slippery slope, those people tend to be criticized by people who claim that it is some sort of fallacious reasoning and say A will never reasonably lead to B etc.... Well its spreading.... https://www.climbing.com/news/in-some-national-parks-its-lit...

Re: Mindless chit chat

@tibber So we were also pretty amazed by all the poppies and could not remember ever seeing poppies in the summer, or this late in the year, from some pretty light research we found a reference to these flowers maybe being called, "Arizona Poppies," which may be a slight misnomer as they are actual...

@big_load
I think the most unscientific answer is probably size, I do remember the ones we saw along Eagle Creek were very stout and noticeably much larger than the desert variety. I am going to take a look at Linda's link though for sure.

Re: Arizona wildlife sightings

Someone posted a picture of a Rocky Mountain Bighorn near a climbing area not too far east of Camp Verde recently and although it was clearly a Rocky Mountain Bighorn, I was kind of doubting it. Then I ran across this article from 2019. I have only seen the Rocky Mountain bighorns in the Blue Range ...

@Pivo https://www.outdoorlife.com/survival/alaska-bear-attack/ Maybe this is why. Although, interesting to note he says he does not think if he had a gun on him it would have helped, the attack happened too fast. He said the brown bear charged so fast he doubted the firearm would have offered any p...

Re: Bears In The News

This is a great read, its about a hiker who killed a mom grizzly with a gun not too long ago in the Wind River Range. The hiker admits some tremendous regret over killing the bear as it ultimately sealed the fate of the two cubs as well. I thinks its a pretty good read and shows some nice reflection...

Re: FR 487

@ShatteredArm My general wilderness principles actually makes me ok with the closure as well, that area was starting to see a lot of traffic and the forest in general along with some pretty nice ruins will be better off for the closure. However, I think anytime public access to an area is limited/c...

Re: FR 487

I give some credit to Tonto for the transparency and putting this information out there and they were great when I chatted with them Monday. However, this situation is starting to resemble some of the things going on in wilderness areas across the West. The public is losing access to huge chunks of ...
