Re: Union wants to close some trails because "ermagherd so warm"

@Canyonram
I'd suggest that, after observing all the responses you've been getting, that you'd mute yourself, if you had some self-awareness.

Re: Rincons and Weather

@nonot
Elevation doesn't really matter, but whether you're on a prominent topographic feature like a ridge or peak certainly does.

@Canyonram
I don't have any questions for you, other than, why do you think we're all a bunch of idiots?

Seriously, I'm not interested in what you think you know about exercising in hot weather. I have a lot of experience doing it.

Re: Union wants to close some trails because "ermagherd so warm"

@Canyonram I guess you didn't actually bother to read the articles you posted, and just found headlines you liked, because: The biggest factor in heat stroke is the heat you generate yourself – and the faster you move, the more heat you create. If this is true - and it came from the very articles y...

Re: Union wants to close some trails because "ermagherd so warm"

Unless you are from Krypton and have an “S” on your chest and wear a cap, the Heat Index applies to EVERYONE. We all have a crash-point where we will suffer the impacts of physical exertion in extreme heat. Those who are heat-acclimated and in great physical conditioning can last a little longer—it...

Re: Rincons and Weather

@Watauga
I wouldn't be worried if you're at Grass Shack. Tanque Verde Ridge wouldn't be ideal in a lightning storm, although Juniper Basin is in a little valley, so the campground is really probably in the safest location on the entire ridge.

Depends on the situation, but in this case, mountain bikes, pedestrians, and equestrians are explicitly still allowed. Just no motor vehicles.

Not a fan of the application fee, they should just raise the price for successful applicants.

Re: FR 487

I actually wouldn't be too upset if the road doesn't reopen for awhile. It was really nice being able to stroll around up there last weekend with no traffic. The road is necessary to connect a few of those trails together, and while I usually hate having to walk or jog on forest roads, it's not too ...

@RedRoxx44
Took 60 between Superior and Miami the other day and the Madera Peak part of the mountain looked pretty well torched. Middle part of the mountain near the summit didn't look as bad, but it was far away.

Re: Union wants to close some trails because "ermagherd so warm"

But let me tell you from first hand knowledge no human should be out there when these heat related rescues happen. I'll take science over what you call "first hand knowledge". There's a such thing as heat acclimatization. Before Jim Walmsley achieved his first Western States victory a few years ago...

Re: White River NF (Colo) proposes permit/fees for Maroon Bells Wilderness

I was just out there on the Fourth, probably about as crowded as it gets, and it didn't feel crowded. Sure, I saw quite a few people, but it's so big that there was plenty of space. Talked to a guy at the TH who had backpacked it, and he said he had no problem finding a campsite (although it's possi...

Re: Colorado Considers Charging for 14er Access

Are there really that many people going all the way out to the Sangre de Cristo to summit Crestone? I would've expected a much greater need for permitting on peaks like Elbert, Grays, and Bierstadt.

Re: Union wants to close some trails because "ermagherd so warm"

Firefighters suffer cardiac arrest, skin cancer and numerous other health ailments at a far higher rate than the rest of the population. Life expectancy is lower and when there are national emergencies it is firefighters that are at the tip of the spear and die seeking to save the lives of the inno...

Re: Union wants to close some trails because "ermagherd so warm"

@chumley Your mistake here seems to be that you're assuming that people are interested in making decisions based on data and hard evidence, and not knee-jerk reactions. I would enthusiastically support the city council deciding to commission a study to determine the best way to reduce heat-related ...

Re: Union wants to close some trails because "ermagherd so warm"

I'm not sure closing the trails will reduce risk for first responders. We do know it will increase the risk for hikers because people will ignore the rules, but have nobody around to help them. First responders might even need to do more because there may be some cases where other people being aroun...

Re: Union wants to close some trails because "ermagherd so warm"

Why does this keep coming up? It should be common knowledge by now that closing the trails will only result in more problems, because people will go out there anyways but have fewer people to help them if they're distressed.
