Re: Good hikes near Dallas

I spent six weeks camping at Cedar Hill State Park. I know they have a trail system there but, as I was there during a particularly wet winter, they were all under water. Nice respite from the city, though. As I recall, it's about a 20 minute drive southwest of downtown, on US 67.

Re: SOBO Section Hike: Pine to Roosevelt, 3/19 Start

Awesome! I hope it's an enjoyable hike for you. Just this week, I assumed stewardship responsibility for the section of Passage 23 that runs SOBO from Red Hills Divide Tr Jct to Barnhardt Tr Jct. Additionally, I work with other stewards responsible for several other Mazatzal segments of the AZT. We ...

Re: Bear bagging

I agree with nonot regarding bear canisters. In my opinion, the weight they add is negligible when compared to the utility of having them. In addition to keeping all critters (not just bears) away from your food, it's a great place to store things you want to keep dry. In camp, it makes an excellent...

If people want to Carpool from the I-10 Corridor, I'm sure we can arrange that....
I'm at I-17 and Cactus (NE of Metrocenter) and have room in my Subaru Forester for 3 and their gear. PM me if interested.

@joebartels Wowzers! That's awesome! :app: It didn't occur to me the junctions could be added after the track was recorded.

Or did you go re-hike those over the weekend?

Re: 2018 Hazolutions

My year on-trail didn't pan out quite as I had envisioned. For the second time in a row, I signed on for the 52 Hike Challenge. For the second time in a row, I came up short. I wound up stuck at home in the valley over the summer much more than I had anticipated, cutting deep into my outdoor time an...

Re: Fort Huachuca Access 2017

I was on a Southeastern Arizona trip last month. Love that whole region. 360-views of mountains are a real treat. Only being half-aware of the geography, I attempted to reach Sierra Vista from AZ 83 but turned around when I saw the guard shack at the west gate to the base. Thanks, @RedRoxx44 . Now, ...

Re: AZT Flagstaff to GC mid-Nov

Flagstaff is at 7,000 ft elevation. According to usclimatedata.com, average hi/lo for November is 52/18. Average snowfall is 7". As a former resident, I've seen snow on the peaks as early as October. Other years barely any at all. You will most certainly want to be prepared for extreme cold weather.

@hikeaz I attended one of these releases several years ago. It really was a sight to see. Great time of year to be up there. Definitely bring binoculars or scope. You're too far away to see much with the naked eye.

@Trew According to the AZT guidebook, the most reliable water on the Kaibab is going to be at Jacob Lake Inn and Kaibab Lodge. All the other sources are a crapshoot.

@Trew Is it too late for what? Fall color? Above-freezing nighttime temps? Snow-free travel? As long as you're prepared for the realities of high-country backpacking this time of year, it's never too late. Some timeframes are just more ideal than others. Be informed: All things AZT can be found at ...

@rcorfman I’m of the opinion that if the health and balance of a habitat (e.g. wilderness, wetland, etc.) is best served by the exclusion of humans, so be it. I’m the guy that heeds the warnings to not trample cryptobiotic soils; to not blaze new trails, or otherwise act in opposition to the best i...
