Re: USGS Survey Markers??

For example CH5531 was set in 1946 and only includes Lat and Long info, but no elevation info. Is that all I should expect? I wonder the same thing...here is a pic of the marker on Superstition Peak 5057: https://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=732049 I can get the latitude and longitude from the dat...

Re: Westward Arch, Goldfields

@hikerdw It looks like the Tonto National Forest finally does have an updated closure order in the Sunrise Arch/Bulldog Cliffs area: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd532582.pdf I am not 100% certain, but it looks to me like the use trail going up Gateway Canyon is in the closure...

Re: Mogollon Rim Ranger District - Road Conditions 2019

Today I called the Black Mesa Ranger District in the Apache-Sitgreaves Forest and they said that Rim Road 300 is open from the east end, although it is "travel at your own risk"

Re: Completing the highline trail - 3rd time is the charm

Zane Grey 50 is an annual trail run http://zanegrey50.com/ This year's Zane Grey 50 run is on Saturday April 27. The course will include the section of the Highline Trail from the Tonto Fish Hatchery to the 260 Trailhead. Unless you enjoy sharing a trail with about 150 runners, you might want to av...

Re: Did the "4/6/19 GPS rollover" affect your device?

It looks like some Boeing 787's in China had problems with the 20 year rollover issue and had to be grounded while waiting for a software update

Re: Did the "4/6/19 GPS rollover" affect your device?

I uploaded the most recent software update for my gpsmap 64s this morning, which is version 5.30. I checked and my device is showing the correct date, although I do not know if there was a date issue prior to installing this update.

Re: Westward Arch, Goldfields

@joebartels They still do not have an updated closure order on their website. Here is the current link on their website to Order 12-17-291: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd532582.pdf The closure order would seem to be more effective if they would publicize it on their website a...

Re: Annoying Garmin problem

I have a Garmin 64s and there is a limit on the number of tracks that I can have on my device -- I believe that the limit is 100 I once had the same problem that you are having: I would copy tracks from my desktop to my device (I always use basecamp). I never had any problems accessing a track on my...

Re: Westward Arch, Goldfields

I spoke with John at the Tonto Mesa District Office who confirmed that closure 12-17-291 is still in effect and being in the two areas outlined in the map is prohited during the given dates of December 1 through June 30. Do you know if the use trail going up Gateway Canyon is in the closure area? I...

Re: Westward Arch, Goldfields

@joebartels yes it was set to expire on Feb 10, 2019 instead of the end of February. my bad

I'd be curious to know whether or not they renewed the closure order...it might just be an oversight on their part that the website has not been updated

@hikerdw Is there a website link to that map? I looked at the Tonto National Forest website and found a link to a closure order in the Bulldog cliffs area, which expired at the end of Feb. 2019: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd532582.pdf It does look like Gateway Canyon is eith...

Re: Goldfield Mountains Hikes not found

@Mr_Squishy With all due respect to Ted Tenny, does the fact that he wrote a book about hiking in the Goldfields make him the "Godfather of the Goldfields"? I would disagree that there aren't many of Tenny's hikes described on HAZ: examples of HAZ hikes that correspond to Tenny's book include the P...

I saw a roadrunner and some doves and gambel's quail in my backyard the other day...the doves/quail seemed unconcerned about the presence of the roadrunner, so I guess that roadrunners don't eat doves/quail
