Re: Washout on Barnhart?

I'm really bad with guestimating distances so that part could've been anywhere from the 1.75-2.5 mile mark if I had to estimate. I'd never been on the trail before so I don't know what it was like previously but that area now is a pile of rocks of various sizes about 15? feet wide or so that have sl...

Re: Hammock Camping in the Mazatals

Reporting back for future hammockers: Chilson camp has a lot of very mature/large trees spaced at good hang distances and could easily get 10+ hammocks in the various camps in the area. Similarly, horse camp has plenty of options. Between these areas, there are a couple of things that could work in ...

Re: "Turkey" Benchmark by Rincon Peak

@SpiderLegs I've hiked around 180 miles in the last 3 weeks or so on various trails below 5k feet and it's been... special. The trails are insane with overgrowth of grass and catclaw (which is softish now but I think will firm up into blood letting goodness soon). I just got back home from the mazz...

@decepticonjon

I'm headed out today but just bringing the hammock and hoping for the best. If you see a dude in a blue shirt with the robot from 'lost in space' tatted on his calf, feel free to say hi!

Re: Hammock Camping in the Mazatals

@nonot Thanks for the info and it definitely has a lot of room for exploring. I've held off so far because the logistics are just a bit more difficult and it's harder to put together 2-3 day loops there that don't repeat a lot of the same trail due to where the more accessible trailheads are/how th...

@jacobemerick
Awesome, thanks. I saw some pictures that made it look promising but always nice to have it confirmed. Got the hammock at the beginning of the year and love it so trying to put off having to use my tent for another month when it's prime low desert season. :)

Hammock Camping in the Mazatals

The dropping weather this week reminded me that I really wanted to get into the eastern Mazatals before it drops a bunch more and do some exploring as I haven't hit that up yet. I have the opportunity to take a few overnight/2 night trips in the next couple of weeks and would prefer to take my hammo...

Re: Hiking vehicles

@RedRoxx44 They have the option for different tires but those tires are actually pretty nice; just not for that sort of more extreme off-road that 98% of people won't ever do. For the off grid charger, they come with a portable charger that's pretty interesting: can plug in to 240 or 120volt; they ...

@Devinmiller360
Have you talked to the facebook user 'So Many Roads'? They're active on the class of 21 page and shuttle out of page. I think I've seen prices that are more like 100 bucks which is a lot more fair than 2-500 for sure

Re: The Scourge of the Americas arrived earlier than Thought

@Alston_Neal So the viking theory really has never gotten much traction as there's not a lot of evidence that they were widespread and they definitely weren't the closest to be the earliest. The Bering Strait hypothesis has also *mainly* been dead/expanded by people in the field for a little while ...

Thanks, very much appreciate the reply and checking on that. Kind of disappointing, though; just another restriction making that side of the supes harder to access which is a bummer.

Re: SR 88 - Apache Trail

@wallyfrack Not the preference but a nice option to have if I were to go there and find something closed. I haven't been out there before; when you did this, was there somewhere you could leave your car for a few days? edit: nevermind. pulled it up on google maps and looks like there is a parking a...

Re: SR 88 - Apache Trail

@joebartels Yeh, I saw that, too, but it's a bit of a drive for me so I'd prefer something more than, "a friend told me something" :D Now that things are cooling off a bit, trying to plan on some nice eastern supe backpacking trips as I haven't explored out there... Not sure if my subaru can make t...

Re: SR 88 - Apache Trail

I see that someone made a comment here a while ago that it was open from the East to the northern Reavis trailhead but when I go to the 511 site, it makes it look like it's closed a bit farther East than that. Can anyone confirm that they've seen if it's actually open to the point you could get to t...

It is. One suggestion: they come with actual full on biscuits vs being crumbled up already. Break up the biscuits before rehydrating and it's much better; they don't really seem to rehydrate well if left whole.

Re: REI Mountain House Fail

@chumley It really isn’t; peak isn’t doing anything new from a technique perspective. “Fresh” doesn’t matter for their meals at the quantity they’re selling (if you eat it 3 years later, there may be a small drop in quality but they don’t sell/make enough for you to buy something that is that age a...

Re: New forest thinning contract awarded

@hikeaz
Everyone talks about corruption at the really high levels of government but corruption and nepotism are ridiculously more common at these lower levels. Awarding a contract to your ex-USFS mate with no real experience? Sure, what could go wrong.

@khemmers
As of earlier this year, back in April or so, it was still fine for any SUV really, in my opinion, and probably with most passenger cars as well (assuming no inclement weather)

Re: Tent pole repair

I'm generally a trekking pole tent guy but now you have me wondering about my two car camping tents that haven't been used in a year... Guess I'll be setting those up in the yard this weekend just to make sure they're okay!
