Re: Matt's You Tube

Yeh, seems somewhat "harmless" but seems pretty clear he's already admitted to the fraud but trying to make it... less bad. His argument appears to be, "Hey, I won't charge you for this but when you need a real tow, let me know and I'll put in a claim for that, wink wink, nudge nudge." Honestly, I'v...

Re: Favorite Approach Shoe?

A "shoe repairman" is a cobbler, as an FYI. It's a legit specialized field so think they deserve the title.

Re: one night in the Superstitions

"Less Deserty" really isn't going to happen in the Supes. A little less on the Eastern side but I wouldn't be recommending that to anyone right now; those trails are often overgrown in normal years and with this monsoon season, they're probably super special. What do you consider higher mileage? Hav...

Even if you have a pet bear, you should properly hang your lambo or risk the wrath of bear hang nazis

Re: Questions AZT ThruHike NoBo March-April 2022

Starting to email a week in advance would be fine and they should be able to figure out something for you; they take care of thru hikers. I've only ever heard of people having to take one zero/nero before getting a permit and even that is pretty rare. As you've read, they'll just put you up stock si...

Re: 3words to find you

@The_Eagle
They claim it's in 47 languages which I suppose is easy enough/possible since they're not making sentences. Bet there are still a bunch of "dirty" words in some of those, though, as they say the word lists are scrubbed by humans to remove words that might be controversial/problematic

Re: 3words to find you

@chumley I think it’s an interesting and good idea in some scenarios but don’t think it passes the “reality” test. At the end of the day. if someone is trying to send someone else a somewhat precise location, they’re going to use an app to determine their location, and then copy/paste to the target...

Re: Questions AZT ThruHike NoBo March-April 2022

@Magna Welcome; you may also want to joing the AZT Class of 22 facebook group. 1. The lows can vary greatly, with the potential of -8 C in the areas North of the Mogollon Rim in March but the more expected range would be -4 to 2. You can use this site to look at historical numbers: https://www.wund...

Re: Trivia

@chumley I found this: "The Canyon is just too big to see it all, measuring 277 miles by river and much longer by the rims. Between Lee’s Ferry and Lake Mead, the serrated edge of the South Rim runs for a stag-gering 1,373 miles. " No GPS tracks of course. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&e...

Have fun; it's a nice taster for Northern Arizona. Have a couple meadows, some small canyons, forests. Good stuff

Re: Mogollon Rim, Payson suggestions.

@Mr_Squishy Nice, I have the borah bug bivy myself. Nice piece of kit. It depends on where you start, really. If starting from General Springs, which seems to be a popular place to start, I'd probably start counter-clockwise just to get the 300 "road" walk out of the way first. Additionally, Barber...

Re: Superstitions - Dripping Springs Reliability

Yeh, that's the same I have for a paper map. I do all my planning on a national company that will spam the shit outta ya until you opt out GPS for backpacking trips as it allows you to quickly build/change routes and see the mileage and elevation profiles which is nice. It looks like you may be plan...

Re: Mogollon Rim, Payson suggestions.

@Mr_Squishy The lows are right around/right below freezing right now at night and the highs are in the mid-50s. As for a tent, I'd say it would depend on two things: whether there's snow or it's going to be windy. Tents don't really provide a whole ton of heat retention, just a couple degrees reall...

Re: Superstitions - Dripping Springs Reliability

@jfrankel You can get reports here if you go to the 'plan' section and 'map' and zoom in on the supes, select water, and filter. You can also look at guides for different trails and see the water reports on the right side of the page for that section. In general, there aren't a lot of water reports...

Re: Mogollon Rim, Payson suggestions.

@Mr_Squishy I mean, if you haven't explored at all up there, Cabin Loop is the natural suggestion. Bit chilly up there at night right now but if you have the right gear, no biggie. Outside of that, the stretch of AZT between Pine and the rim is pretty fantastic you should be able to arrange however...

That water looks freaking amazing compared to most the crap I end up filtering here in AZ. I'm thinking ALMAL meant to bring my own bail?

Re: Superstitions - Dripping Springs Reliability

@friendofThundergod Thanks! You echoed some of the concern I had with the fire/active monsoon potentially changing some patterns. It'll be part of a multi-night trip and I've been itching to get out but was waiting for more trip reports on trail conditions/water reports. I'm at the point where I'm ...
