Re: Saguro NP 2 night

@xsproutx The area around the top of Mica Mountain is beautiful. I did a trip in the spring which put me at Manning Camp for two nights which gave me a full day to explore the network of trails up there. If you don't mind the climb and have the time then you could get to Manning in one day via eith...

Re: 2021 Fire Season

@chumley

According to the viirs hit that I posted part of the activity was just above Roger's Rock where I feel like I've seen a campsite. The other is just above the Four Springs trail as it's drawn on the USFS map. Agreed that the overall placement is rather odd though.

Re: 2021 Fire Season

Looks like it's in the Kent Springs / Roger's Rock / Four Springs trail area. Hopefully it's just underbrush as it would be a shame to see that beautiful area torched. .

The closure expired yesterday and, so far, Coronado hasn't extended it. I guess that the mountain is now completely open... have at it!!

Re: Hiking Boots

There are a lot of supply chain issues with outdoor products right now and shoes are definitely experiencing some major availability issues. Part of the problem is a shortage of foam which has impacted a number of industies. The other is that a lot of shoe manufacturing is done in Vietnam and they a...

the next few days will probably be awesome days for hiking ... Baldy or ... Heading up for a 3-day stint in the White Mountains this weekend with a plan to do Baldy on Sunday. As far as I can tell the weather is predicted to hold through the weekend, but the NWS is obviously hedging in their foreca...

Re: Mindless chit chat

Coronado NF has posted a few photos from Sabino Canyon. Included is a notice of temporary closure of the recreation area as well as a number of Pusch Ridge trails: https://www.facebook.com/CoronadoNF/posts/3992874620821125 USGS gauge at the dam has current flow at 3390 cfs and relatively steady whic...

Re: Mindless chit chat

Major storm hit just before midnight in Tucson and raged on for over an hour. Although there was very little wind, there was lots of lightning and rain. Closest county rain gauge recorded 2.28" and based on the intensity of what kept me awake that seems about right. Sabino Canyon flashed around 1:30...

Re: Arizona Environmental Doom and Gloom

Honestly, I think that this is a good thing for students and for the University. Until now students interested in a career in mineral resources had to choose one of two paths. Through the College of Engineering they would benefit from an education which was heavily focused on practical applications ...

Re: 2021 Fire Season

iologists determined the need to remove the fish after assessing the potential for ash flow impacts to the creek after the fire, during monsoon season. Is it possible to gauge the severity of the burn from this action? Are we talking large-scale moonscape like the Whitewater-Baldy fire or more of a...

@chumley This year definitely *feels* different than past years. I can't remember the last time I saw a forecast for the last week of June that is as mild as what I'm seeing for next week (high '90s). Of course this means that humidity is going to be awful, but hopefully we'll get the right balance...

Re: Alternative destinations for those impacted by AZ forest closures

@hikeaz

It would be awesome if the people running the AZ forests could adopt the practice of publishing a list like this. Would love to see the same for the Blue (although the photo of the map in the Alpine RD office is somewhat useful).

Re: 2021 Fire Restrictions

Well, you right, but technically Rincon Peak isn't part of the Coronado. Yeah, it was more of an illustration of something devastating that could happen as a result of Cornado not closing. Of course, it goes without saying that a fire in that area could be devastating to the surrounding communities...

Re: 2021 Fire Restrictions

Kinda surprised the Coronado is not more restricted, but as someone else said, there isn't much in the Coronado that didn't burn in very hot in the last 20 years. Although mostly true there are a couple of scenarios that would be devastating. - Brush fire in Happy Valley getting up onto Rincon Peak...

Re: 2021 Fire Restrictions

Plenty of great stuff that's not in the wilderness. Your comment prompted me to start this thread: https://hikearizona.com/dex2/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=11434 Poked around MapDEX a bit and consulted some maps, but I'm not seeing a lot of obvious trails or destinations outside of the wilderness. If you ...

Alternative destinations for those impacted by AZ forest closures

Some comments in the fire restrictions thread got me thinking that it might be worth having a repository for information on alternative destinations. I know of several people, myself included, who have canceled trips due to closures. With most of the AZ national forests closed for an indefinite peri...
