Is somebody cleaning up disinformation on Facebook? That's going to take a while.

Re: Coconino NF proposes trailhead transit expansion

USFS is kind of incestuous with Pink Jeep et al.. My pet peeve there is how outfitters are allowed to cache items in designated Wilderness Areas, but the general public is not. (I may have previously disregarded explicit direction to not cache water, but my recollection is getting dim). Anyway, bac...

Re: Hiking with poor vision

I've worn progressive Rx for about six years, and I started to feel eye strain on my original ones after I got my second pair (new prescription). Two years later I updated my original lenses (another new prescription) and they felt a lot better. I should mention that although I've worn Rx sunglasse...

Re: Hiking Boots

I've noticed a huge drop in available models from most brands that interest me, not just in NJ (REI and Ramsay Outdoor), but in the handful of other places I've been (Iowa City, Salida, Buena Vista, REIs in Boulder and Silverthorne). It seems like manufacturers pared back to just a few of their bigg...

Re: Mindless chit chat

Autumn finally came to NJ. We've had two consecutive nights with lows in the 40s, a drop of 15-20 degrees, and highs have dropped from the low 80s down to the upper 60s. It's hard to believe now, but we'll start raking leaves in three weeks.

That was two earlier sets of Thanksgiving Dinners. Noah wasn't invited.

@RedRoxx44

This is so exciting! I've been hoping for years that the irrefutable evidence would emerge to get the Pre-Clovis deniers to relent. I hope this is it.

That is pretty bad. It's like what happens here when it snows.

Re: I-17

@big_load I've heard about that. I was in Buena Vista just before Memorial Day, and managed to escape west just in time to avoid the rush. In CO, I'm usually willing to go very far out of my on back roads and I avoid the worst travel times, so almost never get caught in that myself. Buena Vista has...

@azbackpackr

I guess it's all relative, but yeah, pretty much. Heading toward Denver on Friday a couple weeks ago, traffic in the opposite direction was bumper-to-bumper for over 70 miles.

I've restrung a couple sets of tent poles with new shock cord. It was fairly easy, apart from pulling the tips out of the end sections, which required some grunting and a furrowed brow.

Re: I-17

There's probably a breaking point somewhere (and that point isn't the same for everybody) but I think that there are examples of other congested routes in America that lead away from population centers that are far more congested than I-17 and people still choose to sit in traffic for hours to get ...

Re: Hiking vehicles

My last rental was a 2020 4Runner. I didn't do anything challenging with it, but I did switch into 4WD for the last little bit of some rough roads. I liked its volume for carrying stuff, but the overall size seems a bit large for going off-road. On-road, the mileage was unimpressive at best. Handlin...

Peat Bog There's a somewhat famous peat bog near me, indicated on some maps as "Newton Bog". It was once mined for peat by fertilizer companies, the longest running being Hyper Humus. It surprisingly had a train line running along one edge, with a train station where they loaded the peat. It took a...

Re: Quicksand??

I haven't seen any in AZ, but a bunch of HAZ folks once crossed a little patch of quicksand in Grand Gulch. The deepest I sank in was the bottom of my calves. We sank some trekking poles to their full length in a minute or so with a little jostling.

@Alston_Neal I'm not sure if Union County has any trails.
