Re: Missing hiker in Mazatzals - gpsjoe (Joe Domin)

Yup... being a bit more familiar with that area that's what I had hoped to knock out first, followed by a start on area E.

Re: Missing hiker in Mazatzals - gpsjoe (Joe Domin)

Well doggone it... ](*,) Now I wish I went up this morning. Live radar at 5am this morning looked like it would be inundated for a few hours and with all the warnings about the road I went a bit conservative. Although the forecast doesn't look much better, I'll take another shot at it Monday and/or ...

Re: Missing hiker in Mazatzals - gpsjoe (Joe Domin)

You can set your minds at ease... I will not even be driving up to check the road and will be hiking locally instead. Based on the current weather radar loop, Mt Peeley is being covered by a heavy weather front from the west and another front on the way so rain is the order of the day. With the long...

Re: 2-way radios: What's good, reliable and cost efficient?

In general, truckers WANT to hear all the conversations to keep up on where the "smokies" are so it makes sense to use the same channel. However if there happens to be a number of separate hiking groups in the same vicinity, I'm not so sure they'd want to jump all over each other's conversations. On...

Re: Mt. Peeley Trailhead 12/18-19

If I feel the road is greasy at all on the way in I'll turn back. If it is ok I'll keep an eye out so if it does start to rain again I'll head out ASAP.

Re: Mt. Peeley Trailhead 12/18-19

It's very likely cancelling is the wise/correct decision. That said, because my Saturday is completely open, whether I searched or not I would be hiking SOMEWHERE, rain or shine. So... I will be going up there anyway on the off-chance the weather doesn't turn out so bad. If the road is impassable I'...

Re: Mt. Peeley Trailhead 12/18-19

Here's what the waypoint search areas look like when superimposed on all previous search tracks. (All posted on HAZ) 1. All search areas _Waypoints_ALL.jpg 2. B & C zoomed in _Waypoints_BC.jpg 3. B & C zoomed in with possible changes to avoid previously searched areas _Waypoints_BC+.jpg 4. D, E & F ...

Re: Mt. Peeley Trailhead 12/18-19

As you can see, I missed way points F02, F08 & F09. My thoughts to finish clearing Waypoint F area on Saturday: 1. One group (3-4?) to zigzag between my track and the Thicket Spring Trail all the way into the area I missed on Monday (the red on the map three posts up) and possibly wind upward and lo...

Re: Mt. Peeley Trailhead 12/18-19

Finally got my fingers working well enough to type up the trip log... more like an Epic Trek log. For lack of any better place I put it under Cornucopia/Thicket Spring Loop. As long as there is still searching going on, maybe an official HAZ "GPSJoe Search" hike is in order?. BTW, on my drive out fr...

Re: Mt. Peeley Trailhead 12/18-19

I just returned from searching in the area of Waypoint F area. I had planned on being out long enough to cover every part of the Waypoint F area, but even with two full sets of clothes there was just too much rain to do any more than one long sweep out as far as a gap in the area I had searched on 1...

Re: Missing hiker in Mazatzals - gpsjoe (Joe Domin)

I'm leaving in 30 minutes and will be there til sundown today so I can at least provide an update by 7 pm this evening. Looks like most of the heavy weather will hit today late morning and possibly snow in the afternoon. Tomorrow appears to have 10-15% chance of rain so hopefully it stays away to dr...

Re: Mt. Peeley Trailhead 12/18-19

2. If we go by what SAR said about Joe not having signed the summit log ("nothing but dust in the container") it seems likely he did NOT make the summit. (From what I understand, if he did in fact make it, he WOULD have signed it.)

@SunRay:
On the Motorola site they show nothing as just MR350, but there is an MR350R and an MR350RVP:

Re: 2-way radios: What's good, reliable and cost efficient?

I've been scanning the internet and on ConsumerSearch the top-rated GMRS radio is the Motorola MR350. Something I found out, they are UHF radios, and as such, they are pretty much line-of-site possibly reaching 25 or even 50 miles under ideal conditions, but sometimes they may only reach .5 mile. So...

2-way radios: What's good, reliable and cost efficient?

With the search for Joe going on using 2-way radios it got me to thinking it might be time to pick up a set. But of course, not having put much thought into it previously, I would rather hear the good, bad and ugly from fellow hikers before taking the say-so of a retail clerk, even if they may have ...

Re: Mt. Peeley Trailhead 12/18-19

I just did a search of HAZ and I found no thread on two-way radios so will start one under Gear.
I'm wondering is there any consensus on what works, what's reliable etc.?

I don't want to hijack the thread so if you have any thoughts to share, please head off to the 2-way thread under Gear.
Thanks!

Re: Mt. Peeley Trailhead 12/18-19

Top try to make sense of just what we'd like to search and where, I figured we need to document where we HAVE searched already. So I created a GPS file by entering every GPS track I could find posted on HAZ into one master file, then I took a screenshot to see what the coverage map looked like. The ...

Agreed 100%!

(As much as I chipped in with other ideas, I'll have no problem being a faithful worker bee and take whatever route I'm deemed worthy of. Just put me in coach!)

Re: Mt. Peeley Trailhead 12/18-19

My Thursday just opened up so I might head back again before Saturday. Forecast now looks like 40% chance of rain Thursday so I might find out first hand how it turns out. If it rains Thursday and clears Friday it might be decent enough to still access the TH without too much trouble... hopefully.
