Re: Mt. Peeley Trailhead 12/18-19

Referencing the smells... When I was out there yesterday, the wind early in the day was generally out of the north and coming down the slope. Later I felt some gusting from below up toward the summit. Although I stopped hundreds of times to check wind direction and check for odors, I got no trace of...

Re: Mt. Peeley Trailhead 12/18-19

I keep my GPS in a zippered pouch that a belt on my CamelBak goes through, and a lanyard connecting the GPS to my pack so I don't leave it anywhere. I have my hydration hose secured in four places along a vertical chest strap and had no issues with it yesterday. I'll always favor it over bottles bec...

Re: Mt. Peeley Trailhead 12/18-19

@desertgirl Everyone has their own favorites and I'm no different, but I did plan ahead a bit before heading into the the brush. Upper body: I stopped by Sportman's Warehouse on Sunday and found just the thing in a heavy shirt for use as my upper-body outer armor. Wolverine brand long sleeve for onl...

Re: Mt. Peeley Trailhead 12/18-19

It may be Thursday evening before I can commit for sure but so far it looks like I'll be there Saturday as well. I just got warmed up thrashing through loads of Manzanita today so I'll be prepared. Unless heavy rains create deep mud holes on the road I won't have any problem making it to the TH and ...

Re: Missing hiker in Mazatzals - gpsjoe (Joe Domin)

I spent some time out there early today searching in the area between the smells but still came up with no sign of Joe. I had planned to do 2 or 3 vertical sweeps in that area, but due to a problem loading new maps into my GPS I had a blank screen. :o All I could see was the thin black dotted track ...

Re: Mt. Peeley Trailhead 12/18-19

T-B: Very good points. Personally I'd lean toward giving more weight to Grasshopper's comment "maybe near or after dark". Based on how many times Joe bailed very late, especially when returning to the trail head the next morning it's very possible Joe could not make the most "informed" opinion of th...

Re: Missing hiker in Mazatzals - gpsjoe (Joe Domin)

Will anyone be going out searching earlier in the week... as in before the forecast rain comes in? If so, I'd be willing to lend a hand in the search for at least a day, maybe two. Monday 12/13 and/or Tuesday 12/14 work best, Wednesday may be possible. I have no radio and my cell is a T-Mobile so th...

Re: 60CSX at $200 from Costco

--one important thing to note is that your GPS does not replace your compass. It only points the correct direction while moving which can make things very confusing if you've stopped and are trying to figure out where you are. 95% of the time I had my GPS displaying the map screen, so I used to thi...

Re: TObacco products on the trail?

Of all the places I've been to from finding them here, I rarely, if ever, see butts laying around. I wish I could agree with you. Lately EVERY hike I've been on, even in some out-of-the-way areas numerous butts have been laying about. Out the Dutchman from First Water seems to have by far the most,...

Re: Brown's Peak Friday Nov. 26

Dang, changing schedules have a way of messing up the best-laid plans. My S.O. has to work Thursday so Friday will be our Thanksgiving.

Sorry Chris... I'll have to catch a hike with you another time.

Re: Brown's Peak Friday Nov. 26

Shoe-less! Note to self (and others wondering how I lost the toenails): Don't EVER wear shoes/boots with elastic laces! I had bought a pair of Merrell Chameleons which had worked ok on level ground but were the worst thing to wear on the straight up-and-down-and-up-and-down ad infinitum hike with C...

Re: Brown's Peak Friday Nov. 26

Wow, long time no see, huh? This hike will be exactly 3 years since the last time (actually the only time) I hiked with you. I summited Brown's Peak back in June but I'm up for a second time for the year. If another vehicle is needed I can drive as well. Hope this time it turns out better for me... ...

Re: Missing hiker in Mazatzals - gpsjoe (Joe Domin)

I know this will be too late to stop the migration of all who want to help but maybe it's not too late. If you take a moment and go to the Mountain Rescue web site and look at what they require you'd understand why they were "not there" all day Friday. Here's what's on the site: "CAMRA/MCSO-MR team ...

Re: Missing hiker in Mazatzals

The missing hiker is GPSJoe, a very active long time member on HAZ, posting 140 trip logs, 127 photo sets and 122 GPS tracks.

There is a thread on Arizona Hikers that has more details:

My prayers go out to Joe.

Re: Sore Toes During Hiking

Teva Terra-Fi's are the only way to go for me. I've hiked 90% of my hikes wearing Teva's since late 2003 but have been steadily moving closer to 99%. The last major hike I did with hiking shoes was the day after Thanksgiving in '07 with Stiller and I lost all ten toenails after that hike. The 3,000...

Re: Four Peaks Mother Lode

I'm curious as to the road condition. I attempted to climb Brown's Peak Sunday of Labor Day weekend but after driving through three running washes I finally hit a section where the road was too far gone so I had to abort. (I took the Four Peaks road from 87) Not expecting the Forest Service to run o...

Re: Any good mountain biking trails?

There's plenty of information on mountain biking on the mtbr.com forums. This link will get you to the Arizona forum:
http://forums.mtbr.com/forumdisplay.php?f=66
Be sure to click on the link in the top right "Visitors - Read here first" as it has local (and some not so local) trail information.

Do you have any more info you can provide from our hike domer88?
