Re: Changing Hands & AZW Brewing present Craig Childs - May 15th

@tibber
In my mind Chumley's question boils down to: "Why do people seek autographs?"
So while your reply is certainly interesting, no, it doesn't help much... :doh: :lol:

Re: nf-71 to Picture Mountain

@kelly14 If the road stays dry any 2WD pickup should have no issues. On Thursday 4/19/18 Tonto Creek crossing was completely dry and driving conditions of both FR 71 & FR 609 between Punkin Center & Picture Mountain were the best I've ever seen. (Recently graded) FYI, to reach Picture Mountain you ...

Re: AZT and solar panels vs. battery bank alone

Id love to find a Solar Panel that acualy Works, But havent yet Three years ago I bought an X-Dragon 20W solar panel to use on our trip to Tanzania, where with the exception of 1 hour each day we were without power for three weeks. Although we had overcast conditions much of the time, the panel did...

Re: Compasses

I simply can't duplicate by scrolling this way and that on the small screen. Agreed... which is why I do my planning in advance using Route Editor's fine choice of maps on a 15" screen. I first use the Topo maps to get the lay-of-the-land , then switch to Satellite for the fine-tuning. Of course, d...

Re: Last minute gear questions:

@gringodevil What @ultrazona said, and a bit more... How common is it to not bring GPS, only guthook app and paper maps/compass? It's all up to personal preference, but iPhone/SmartPhone using Guthooks and/or AZT apps are becoming the norm. (The only thing Tracey has used for a few years is the AZT...

Re: 2018 Water Reports Border to Picket Post

AZT #15 TH @ Freeman Road As of 3/28/18: 15+ gallons of water for public consumption in the box at the Freeman Road AZT #15 TH. (There was also a 'Trail Angel' camped in an RV at the TH with a large cooler so presumably more water is available there as well) AZT #16 TH @ Kelvin Trailhead (See NOTE ...

Re: Compasses

I prefer a map over a GPS because I can review a map and determine where I want to go while a GPS will tell me where to go. I agree maps do offer many benefits over a GPS, but there are benefits of the GPS over a map as well... it's up to which is best for the individual. In my case, a GPS is the b...

Re: AzTrail Passages 16-17

@Preacher It was in the AZT app that Tracey showed me an icon where AZT 17 crosses FR 4, which is where it had the water info I mentioned. NOTE: The supply box used to be at the AZT#17 TH (at the end of #16) but it was so remote and rough on equipment driving out there it was moved to FR 4, which w...

Re: AzTrail Passages 16-17

@Preacher If you have not already done so, get the AZT app . While it may not always be up-to-the-minute, it IS a worthwhile resource as there are folks constantly providing updated water reports. If you have the app and look at the notation for the water box at FR4 (where #17 crosses it) you will ...

Re: help with homework assignment

Instead of 'leading the witness' with predefined questions/conclusions, I'd recommend something more like: - Provide a list of factors (lightweight, waterproof, ventilation, resistance to wear, quick set-up, maybe even factors like reviews, brand name, etc.) - Ask each respondent to rank the factors...

Re: Water at Oak Flat Dispersed Campsites?

@Sredfield
I've never camped there but as many times as I've driven or hiked through, I've never seen water at the campground.
(The only water I've ever seen in the area is what is used by the mining operations.)

@chumley I know what you mean Liz, but personally I would MUCH rather go out hiking, doing something I loved rather than in a memory/aging home or a car accident. However, it would still be my least favorite because it would be my last... @azbackpackr I DO agree with you about the bucket list , alt...

I have no idea what my least favorite hike will be... my least favorite would be the only hike I didn't return from. So far so good. :y: Speaking for Tracey (without her knowledge but I'm sure she'd agree), she would likely point out a hundred least favorites... pretty much anything involving fox-ta...

If you pay a little extra attention to the signs as you drive through the Pinto Mine complex you'll be fine.

@ddgrunning
As jonathanpatt said, there are no issues getting to Rogers Trough from the west using FR 172.
If one wishes to drive to the TH on FR 650, just turn in off the US 60 across from Picketpost.

Re: FR 172 & 172A to Rogers Trough TH

@cw50must Since he posted the comment on your Montana Mountain Loop video, he must mean Hewitt Station Road has a 'new' gate. It has been closed for some time due to the dust raised by all the ATV/4x4 traffic. FYI, there is a large sign at the 'ATV Staging' parking lot across from Picketpost which ...
