Re: AZT #14 Freeman Rd access from Dudleyville

@ttretta I've driven Freeman Road from AZ 79 to the AZT #15 (or SOUTHbound on #14) TH three times in the last month and it was like a literal freeway... wide & smooth. I'm sure it was freshly plowed for hunting season. While I haven't driven Freeman from the TH to AZ 77, I would believe it is in si...

Re: Bassett Peak, AZ :: Thatcher/Safford bypass

For me it isn't the time, it's the quality of the experience. Kinda how I feel about Hiking.... Same here. Sure, if I have never driven through an area it's nice to take time to view the scenery. But if I've driven a road many times before, the less time spent 'on-the-road' the more time I can spen...

Re: Bassett Peak, AZ :: Thatcher/Safford bypass

The first time I went to Bassett was the only time I DIDN'T take the bypass. Ever since I've always taken the bypass. IMO, skipping the traffic easily saves MORE than the 34 minutes Joe calculated. Of all the times I've gone through Safford on the way to Mount Graham I've never just breezed through ...

Re: Fun with the Ranger

@RedRoxx44 He probably perked up because it was a relief to know you wouldn't be in need of rescue services, and thus not be a burden ($-wise) to the agency. I had a similar conversation with a Maricopa Sheriff's Deputy at First Water TH yesterday... we went through the litany of: Do you have plent...

Re: Need Help with inReach Explorer

What's bothered me in the past is that the file names on the Garmin are just generic things like "track121", etc. Huh? While the 'default' may be something like that, or the date & time (as on my Garmin 62ST), you can change the name when you save it. Every Garmin GPS I've owned has allowed changin...

Re: Need Backpacking Suggestions!

@Trailbot RE: We recommend the southern route on Forest Service road 172 and 172A but a high clearance rear wheel or four wheel drive vehicle is recommended. I drove FR172 two days ago and the road is the best I've ever seen it... even met a medium-clearance car on the way back out. UNLESS there is ...

Re: 400 GB SanDisk Ultra microSD card

And I agree with Joel, formatting the card in the camera is the best option AFTER copying the files to the computer AND making a backup. For sure! While I have had no physical/electronic card failures, I HAVE experienced procedure failure on more than one occasion: Deleting files from a card after ...

Re: AZT - Phoenix to Flagstaff

@chelseabrian My quick answer would be AZ State Route 87 from Phoenix through Payson to Lake Mary Road and following that to Flagstaff. (Roughly 165-170 miles & 16,000' accumulated elevation gain.) To provide the most usable information it would be helpful to know a few things: 1. Do I understand c...

Re: 400 GB SanDisk Ultra microSD card

Tips I've heard for extending the life of a card: 1. Don't delete photos off the card after transferring to a computer; rather, format the card. 2. When formatting the card, format in the camera using the camera menu. Don't format on the computer like you would a hard drive. I don't remember the so...

Re: 400 GB SanDisk Ultra microSD card

@chumley
Whether MMC, CompactFlash, SD, SDHC, SDXC, I've never had any memory card failure (even USB sticks).
I can't offer much as far as expected lifetimes because I no longer use the oldest ones, but I have two 3 year-old cards still in regular use.

Re: Lightweight backpacking tripod solution

@skatchkins After all the creative tinkering I'm curious how much did the tripod weigh? I had been looking into a lightweight tripod for a while but was put off by some of the ridiculous prices. So instead of searching for the lightest I leaned toward for the cheapest and found one for $8.99 on Ama...

Re: 360 cameras

Kuula just added an easy-to-embed feature. The embedding appears to work much like YouTube's which is fine but it won't work with the JetPhoto Server software I use on my website. As with YouTube embeds, I have a separate page for each video, otherwise it would be a one huge mess on one LOOONG web ...

Re: 360 cameras

So will a flood of HAZers. Depends on how you define ' a flood of HAZers '... personally, I wouldn't bet on it. My 'main' camera died a few days ago so I thought it was time to look into various alternatives, which is when I came across a mention Garmin's VIRB-360. Being unfamiliar with the term '3...

Thanks, but I'll take the Beeline over the I-17... in my experience, it's nothing like the traffic & accidents on the I-17.

Re: Keep fido out of the Oven - Too Hot for Spot

I've held my tongue for too long and simply cannot stay silent any longer... I have too much love for dogs. And I take him out because he wants to go. Unless your dog is one-of-a-kind and is able to read a thermometer he has NO CLUE how hot it is outside, so of course he wants to go outside! Please....
