Re: Doll Baby TH to LF Ranch, River Route

The road is fairly easy walking and not much further than the shortcut but it is a road, I guess I would be interested in how easy is the short cut? Does it involve a lot of brush? It would save one mile of hiking, .9 mi vs 1.9 mi. At one time it was a road down to Tub Draw and based on the satelli...

Re: Doll Baby TH to LF Ranch, River Route

@Sredfield
Not sure about following the river, especially with a backpack... while we followed it in April 2015, we very likely would not have been able to do it without getting wet when we were there last month.
I'd just follow FR406W.

Re: City Creek Trailhead?

Drive another 1.3 miles west of City Creek trailhead and you'll find the Doll Baby trailhead is a better choice with plenty of room.
Not sure I'd want to leave a vehicle there for 2 weeks.
I'd recommend contacting the Tonto National Forest Payson District Office for more information: 928-474-7900

Re: Cherry Creek

What route? #1. AZ 288 south to Board Tree Saddle then FR 203 down to AZ 288? #2. FR 54, south to FR 329 and connect to FR 203 just south of Board Tree Saddle? Having driven Option #2 you'll rack up 55 miles and 4300' AEG as you DESCEND from 5100' to 2300'. Plenty of fun, beauty, rough & rocky 'road...

Re: Annoying Garmin problem

switching from Mapsource to Basecamp fixed that problem I liked MapSource and stuck with it LONG after BaseCamp was available but with newer computers and operating systems I finally bit the bullet and started using BaseCamp. While I have used it for a few years now, there are more 'features' I hat...

Re: Annoying Garmin problem

Needed to occasionally empty the trash folder to keep it working. That is a possibility... if you delete files (windows) or send them to trash (Mac), unless you Empty Recycle/Trash bin, the space is not there for use. Which is why I always empty trash whenever I delete files from my GPS... and that...

@Hansenaz I have a 62ST but have NEVER used BaseCamp for the file transfer to the GPS's SD card and so far no issues. Caveat: no issues with the TRANSFER... FORGETTING to upload the file(s) before I left home? Now that HAS been a problem. ](*,) So now I follow theses steps: 1. Upload the file to th...

Re: Superstition Wilderness Pic (Where?)

That's Siphon Draw in the background and the Grand Apache Junction Canyon in the foreground... ok, so what if the canyon was pasted in front. @Grasshopper If Renee bought it for its true historical value, it's a fraud and she should ask for her money back. However... if it was purchased simply for t...

Re: Current conditions in the Superstitions

I have a SUV that I couldn't get too much past FR 650 near Whitford Canyon Of the two Forest Roads to Roger's Trough, FR 172 & FR 650, the Forest Service only maintains FR 172. So... unless you have a capable vehicle and really want to go that way, don't waste your time on FR 650... it is an UN-mai...

Re: Snake Gaiters -worth it?

@toddak So you want to wear gaiters over the MTB armor you're already wearing? :) BTW, I encountered my first rattler of 2019 today within a hundred yards of leaving the car. It was in a low bush about a foot from where my boot was while following a wild horse trail. I didn't see it until it starte...

@hikingaz2
Your own Trans-Goldfield route of March 2017 takes you within a half-mile south of the arch right about here: 33.524472 -111.535509
I'm wondering if you could follow a somewhat direct line from that point NE up to the arch at: 33.528533 -111.529267

I purchased an Acevan 2950mAh Li-ion Battery ($13) for it and it works like new. How is the replacement battery working out so far? After reading numerous reviews of the various replacement batteries for the S5 it's a gamble no matter which brand you buy. Will the battery I end up with be from the ...

While Tracey is always the second hiker, many times I neither see nor agitate the snake so she ends up telling me (more like YELLING at me) look at what you just stepped over!

Re: Snake Gaiters -worth it?

@kenjacobsen As a consequence of tons of off-trail hikes over the years I have had at least two dozen close encounters (a number of them documented on YouTube) as well as one when I inadvertently actually stepped on a rattler in a bush (I have the sound and fury aftermath of it on video), I still f...
