@nonot

Agreed. Monetizing a commodity is the easy part... it gets tricky to do so when 'enjoyment', 'solitude', etc. need to have a $$ value assigned. And who PAYS?

Re: Blue Range Primitive Area - Linking Dutch Blue Creek with Bear Mtn

Thank you for the link, I was not aware of the existence and consequences of the the Multiple Use-Sustained Yield Act of 1960 (MUSYA), and my previous reply does not seem accurate in that regard. You have more patience than me to read through that drivel to disseminate that tidbit. I was just pokin...

Re: Blue Range Primitive Area - Linking Dutch Blue Creek with Bear Mtn

Yes... I have hiked some of the TRACKS' trails - Like you say.. very good shape but kind of benign as to the landscape/points of interest. My comments should have been directed district by district, I was remiss. Mostly I was referring to Alpine, as the trails in the Blue Range is where I generally ...

Re: Blue Range Primitive Area - Linking Dutch Blue Creek with Bear Mtn

ElizaKurt, I fixed the subject spelling :) I blame the nuns that taught me spelling in grade school ...also my Mom was a NYT crossword puzzler - so I was doomed to recognize even slight misspellings.. even mine. Kind of like some of the censors that patrol this forum... they cannot help themselves.

Re: Blue Range Primitive Area - Linking Dutch Blue Creek with Bear Mtn

On almost every visit, I observe a pair of Tonto NF rangers at the Peralta trailhead basically begging people to not litter, bring enough water, and not get lost on weekends; directing traffic to the overflow lot and preventing people from parking in areas where they would block the road (that are ...

Re: Blue Range Primitive Area - Linking Dutch Blue Creek with Bear Mtn

@hikeaz I think it’s largely a factor of population proximity. Tonto has to spend all their resources on picking up trash and preventing people from driving all over the place and crowd control along the salt river corridor whereas there are not 5 million people within an hour’s drive of the Apache...

.............. It's really nice to see the FS reinvigorating an area with so much history and so much to see, for a change.
For my money, A-S does more meaningful trail work with (by far) the least resources of any Az. N.F..

Re: Mindless chit chat

Does anyone know why it is so smoky in Flagstaff today? It seems to be that type of smoky haze which is coming from further away rather than very close by. I know I have fire and weather watching friends out there who know more than to just Google "Why is it so smoky in Flagstaff today?" Yes I trie...

Re: Silver Bridge closure

I grew up (or not ) in eastern Pa.; I remember those bridges well. I believe, if memory serves that the silver bridge is mostly galvanized. And with an average ambient humidity of (guessing) 15% or less..... https://www.shutterstock.com/video/clip-2811568-first-person-view-walking-across-narrow-brid...

Re: Silver Bridge closure

I worked a couple of stints on fall GCNP trail maintenance, which included superficial repair/maintenance of the top-deck of the silver bridge. I am not an engineer but to my eye that thing is vastly overbuilt for its current biped-only use. My guess is that someone noticed something ..... maybe one...

Silver Bridge closure

The Silver Bridge crosses the Colorado River at the bottom of the Bright Angel Trail - It is closed "until further notice" due to "structural concerns". During the closure, hikers will need to cross the Colorado River exclusively via Black Bridge , which is at the bottom of the South Kaibab trail. F...
