Coconino is closed now as is upper Tonto. The Pine Canyon Loop is probably not an option this weekend.

Wow, looks like I made it up there in the nick of time. All the fire restrictions were in place last week, but you could still use propane stoves.

C'mon monsoons!

I was just up there last week, Dom. It's freakin' beautiful- one of the best hikes I have ever done. I can't answer your question about trout- although I did see tons of people fishing at Sheeps Crossing. There are a bunch of campgrounds along 273 past Sunrise. Winn is in between Sheeps Crossing (fo...

I'm a big guy- my Eureka Zeus works great for me- a bit over 3 pounds, and just the right size. I've not found a tent yet that really is much lighter that will fit me. Even the BA Seedhouse 2 is only 4 or so ounces lighter, and seems a bit smaller. The single wall construction of my Zeus could bring...

I'm not sure it will be closed this Friday. FR 300 also gives access to Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest- which is and will remain open. I spoke with FS personnel in the Black Mesa Ranger District today, and they said campgrounds and FS roads in AS will remain open (with total fire restriction, of ...

Granite Gear rocks. The BEST pack I have tried. Thanks to advice from Kurt and Shi, I hike with the Vapor Trail for day hikes, and the Latitude Vapor for extended backpacks (takes care of that pesky top loading frustration). Both weigh just over 2 pounds. I have an alternate view, however. If you ar...

I think I read a trip log under the Salome Jug where someone was snorkeling there- found all kinds of stuff. Check it out...

Might give it a whirl.

Gotta tube? Camp up top of Chevelon Canyon (end of FS480 - you'll need a 4X4 or at least good clearance) and fish in the south end of the lake or hike down Telephone Ridge and hit the pools in the creek. There is good trout taken up there occassionally. You can hike as much as you want on the fisher...

PHD in FITF (fun-in-the-field)

Cool- thanks for the info Matt! My wife starts a FT job with ASU in July- which is going to give us both GREAT cost reductions per credit- so- I'm gonna do it if it is offered! I was looking into, ya know, math and english, and stuff, but who needs that! :D

Okay- now I'm interested! Matt- can you tell us what was the class called exactly, and what department- I want to check out the schedules and see if it is offered next fall or spring. I'm still looking for a good class on land nav- I missed the last Phx Mountaineering opportunity- is there a signifi...

Cabin Loop

According to their respective websites- both Tonto and Apache-Sitgreaves have fire restrictions in place. I was up at Horton last weekend and there were posted restriction signs. Coconino does not yet, so you are good so far, but at Level III, I'm sure they are coming very soon. Pinchot and Aspen ar...

Meanwhile, the Serial Shooter blasting away in the valley (last I heard- the count was 5 murders, not counting the dogs, of course), continues to run free.

Hard not to be pessimestic about the posse's priorities. Of course, this is an uneducated statement, despite the witty alliteration.

Scorpions

I live in Tempe, and we actually have a small scorpion "problem" in our apartment complex. Last January, I picked one up from my living room floor- picked it up! I thought it was a piece of lint or something- but it scurried out of my hand, miraculously not stinging me. I found it- it was translucen...

Fred Haught

I haven't been there recently, but I did do Haught all the way to the Houston Brothers last Thanksgiving. Mostly the hiking was easy up to that point. I'd say its a pretty good start for newbies, but there may be some downed trees and such because of the snowfall. Water should be very reliable. Pino...

Hey Dom- I hiked WCC last summer. I don't recall seeing many fish jumping or anything. It seems most people head in about the first mile- there is a really nice swimming area with a slick rock "crack" that is fun- this seems to be the hang out place for the crowds. The little cabin with the cactus r...

Yep-I was warned at the FW trailhead this morning. The ranger stoically guarding the map board said he saw a good sized buzzworm on the Dutchman.

Hiked down Second Water to Garden Valley, on down to Hackberry Spring. No such luck seeing one myself though.

Hey sis- I had that fee station problem just last weekend- cept it was the opposite! It took my four bucks and didn't give me a ticket at all. I figured it was out of paper. I wrote a note and put it on my dash where it could be seen, explaining that I paid my four dollars but no ticket was given. I...
