Re: Commercial development/Tram into Grand Canyon

The recent proposal to further develop Grand Canyon for tourist use is not at all unique in the recent 100 year history of the area as a National Park. When the first Anglo-European miners in the area realized that there was more $$$ to be made by mining tourists instead of mining for non-existent g...

Heard about the three lost folks last week and have not noted anything else about the three. Follow=up to the three hikers reported in trouble over the week-end. http://www.paysonroundup.com/news/2012/mar/20/three-rescues-all-once/ Lucky they got out before the severe snowstorm hit the Rim country.

Re: Jacobs Lake/Kaibab Plateau Area Forest Roads

Most of the roads to the backcountry locations are closed via barricade during winter weather / snow /etc. Guess you could snowshoe in---but they don't want to have people driving in and becoming stuck and then requiring rescue.

Re: Paria Canyon

The biggest problem with hiking Paria Canyon is slogging through the numerous muck holes---depending upon spring runoff, temp, etc. some of the potholes go septic---meaning the muck has a lot of decaying organic material that releases the rotten egg hydrogen sulfide odor. Be prepared to be one stink...

Re: Mogollon Monster

@Canyonram We deal with many Hopis, many are Katsina carvers and almost all would never carve Masau'u. Very bad Karma. . Just to mention the name Ma'saw (or Masau'u) or to speak about Navajo Skinwalkers (Yenaldlooshi) is bad business----you can call them to you. Skinwalkers are similar to European ...

I've seen it! Pretty sure he started this thread...Shhh ;) Brian, your words are hurtful. I'm taking the bus and you will not see me at the pancake social tomorrow. My mother used to complain that I looked like a caveman. For years I accepted her opinion and suffered in silence. I finally shut her ...

Mogollon Monster

The Mogollon Monster is the Arizona version of Bigfoot. Here's a description: "Like any self-respecting monster he is big and hairy and ugly. He is said to be about 7 feet tall, muscular and covered with long hair. And he smells awful. On the upside, the Mogollon Monster is said to be very shy, and ...

Re: Uranium Mining at Grand Canyon

Denison Mines is in the business of mining, milling, and then selling for profit. I don't think it 'far-fetched' to speculate that their final product makes its way into nuclear weapons instead of nuclear power plants. Denison is a private company and not 'owned' or operated by the Canadian governme...

Re: Uranium Mining at Grand Canyon

The ban on uranium mining around Grand Canyon is coming up for a vote in either late Nov. or December 2011. Really puzzled why some of the politicians are attempting to sabotague the protection even under the notion that it will create jobs. The relatively few employees hired to mine and ship the ur...

Sun-Hiker, When your back/sciatic nerve is feeling better, try an external frame pack---it is easier to have the weight over and above the hips and because the pack is away from the body the center of gravity is changed. It is also easier to stand upright as opposed to an internal frame that (for me...
