Re: Overdue Canyon backpackers [ Bryce Gillies ]

The Arizona Republic Sunday edition newspaper on Jan 3 2010 had a long article covering the tragic death of Bryce Gillies. The article answered many of the questions posted above. Terrible loss since this young man looked to have a bright future---he had just returned from missionary work and was do...

Re: Best Tips for Hiking Grand Canyon

Appreciate everyone who has taken the time to log in a response to my query about best hiking tips. I worked up at the Canyon for a year-and-half with Xanterra. Except for the low pay it was great having the Canyon as my backyard. Thanks again. Gary

Hello Canyon Lovers, I'm compiling a list of 'Best Tips and Techniques' for hiking/backpacking Grand Canyon for a magazine article. If you have something unique and of interest, let me know. Of course, I'm looking for something other than 'take plenty of water' or 'hike in the shade,' LOL. I'll give...

Lots of Gatorade fans. I did a cost break-down between buying the powdered Gatorade and mix it yourself vs. purchasing the liquid Gatorade. About 1/4th the cost to go with the powder and then mix. On long hikes, I will portion out the expect number of servings of powder and mix on the trail with wat...

Favorite Electrolyte replacement

Just read over some of the comments on hiking in the heat. I've tried several electrolyte replacement drinks and was wondering what others have used with success. (I go with Gookinaid -- Hydrolyte).

Agree on the positive benefit of using poles. I feel more secure navigating over rough sections. I picked up some ski poles at the Goodwill for $2.00 and they do the job!

In response to Sredfield's reply: The Trans Canyon shuttle provides great service. Drivers are also lovers of the Canyon and the history of the area and provide great coversation on the trip. Very happy with them (and yes, it is up to $70 but the increased costs for everyone affects this service as...

(1) Late spring and late summer best times to schedule a rim-to-rim. You do need to get your request for dates in ASOP because everyone understands the heat issue and will avoid the summer months. On the other hand, if you can deal with the heat you can sometimes get your hiking schedule during the ...

Re: Kelty Tioga 5500 external pack question

In response to domromer's reply: Hello Domromer, I have the 5000 and use it for extended hikes. Lots of room for all kinds of goodies but the extra room can make it all too easy to carry more than you might need. Does great on extended desert hikes where you have to carry extra water. Because of th...
