Re: Fall GC hike

Snow hits the South Rim even in early November. If you have room in your vehicle, pack for 4-seasons (gear for winter to summer and in-between). Check with the weather forecast and Backcounty office, then make your gear selection and pack immediately before your hike. You run less of a chance of a b...

Re: Dear Friend of the Environment

Rick, Normally I would take the bait and attempt to debate you on your opinion of the Sierra Club. Then again, it would be impossible to move someone who makes a conclusion about an entire organization based off a word in an advertising flyer they didn't like ('war')---within the first sentence. You...

Re: Moving to Casa Grande

Tough move going from Page to Casa Grande. I've lived in both locations and preferred Page by far. Be ready to pay some big bucks on air conditioning with several months with temps. over 100+F. Casa Grande has plenty of houses sitting empty as the area was overbuilt before the construction crash. Ch...

Re: Plane down in canyon?

Has there been any updates? The last I read had the Civil Air Patrol flights equipped with a surveillance device to take extreme close-up views of the terrain. Even though the ELT indicated that the plane went down in the Dragon/Scorpion area on the North Rim---still no recovery? That area is only a...

Survivor Club Personality profile

Author Ben Sherwood, in his book ‘The Survivors Club (2009),’ reviewed life-threatening ordeals and looked for the ‘secrets’ and personality profiles of those who somehow survived horrendous events/accidents. One of his main points is that anyone who is now alive is already a survivor. All of us hav...

Re: Alright FINE ..... I think I need some advice .....lol

Gear selection gets down to individual taste and it can take some trial-and-error to arrive at a given item that works for you. Backpacker Magazine provides frequent product reviews and is an advertising catalogue as much as it is a source for hiking information. A lot of backpackers have a passiona...

Re: Uranium Mining at Grand Canyon

The debate on Uranium Mining continues with a move to retract the moratorium on mining: http://azdailysun.com/news/local/state-and-regional/article_8efc011f-bb5f-514c-b70f-83b5ffaf7fe7.html The uranium mining/milling/use/handling of spent fuel rods cannot be made safe. Re: What's that snake?

Here's a cool site that provides a 'quick and easy' identification tree for snakes. http://www.discoverlife.org/20/q?guide=Snakes Of course, sometimes you don't get all of the necessary markers in a photo or quick glance on the trail. For some species, final identification requires a specimen---when...

Re: unidentified insect

Agree with Al Hikes AZ. Looks like the wingless nymph stage of the Giant Mesquite Bug (Thasus acutangulus). Bight coloration says stay away. Don't try to pick one up for a close look---they repel predators with a stinky odor when disturbed.

Re: Uranium Mining at Grand Canyon

Even with the extended moratorium, there are 11 uranimum mining clains/operations that are 'grandfathered' in under the old 1872 Mining Act that will be able to operate near Grand Canyon. Re: New stock (Mule) usage guidelines

"Western Mule Magazine" has a series of articles on Mules at the Canyon including strong reaction to changes in the way mules are used. Their initial fear was that mule trips into the Canyon was going to be totally eliminated. http://www.westernmulemagazine.com/national-park-service-public-comments....

Kwai, Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with Forever Resorts. As SunRay mentioned, the seasonal staff just arrived and the waitress/kitchen staff are probably still learning the necessary flow to serve customers. And, as PageRob mentioned, the service contract for the North Rim was taken f...
