Re: Mindless weather chit chat

We've received about 2" of rain over the last week here in Walnut Creek. That rain pattern was relatively warm with snow levels at 8,000-feet-plus. The large reservoirs like Oroville, Shasta, Trinity and Folsom are rapidly filling because the rain we had over the last few days has melted a lot of sn...

Re: Happy Birthday! (National Park System)

Belated happy 100th birthday to our best idea! I'll be celebrating in Sequoia National Park next week, and I hope all HAZ'ers get to celebrate at least the idea of preserving our best places even if they're not enjoying a national park.

Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks Next Week

Anyone doing anything interesting for the Perseid meteor shower that's supposed to peak next weekend? Even though I live in northern California I still think about how easy it was to see celestial phenomena in Arizona.

Re: Yosemite

North Dome is a nice half-day option that has great views. The valley is likely to be quite warm (80-85° or warmer is very likely) in late June so I recommend looking for activities off of the Tioga Road or up high on the south side. Unless you're doing something on the Merced River of course. The T...

Re: Pinal Mountains/ Pinal Peak Qs

Here's a link to a GPS track from a trip that went up Six Shooter, visited both peaks, then went down Icehouse. http://hikearizona.com/map.php?GPS=9350 I think the best hike would be up Icehouse, road walk up to Signal Peak, take Pineline to Middle, then road walk up to Pinal Peak, Ferndell from Pin...

Re: Lake Tahoe Hiking

The Sierra Buttes are about an hour away from Truckee, and are worth visiting. I've heard the hike to Mount Rose's summit from the Mount Rose ski area is pretty cool, and a lot more pleasant than its twin hike from the east side (i.e. Reno). I have some familiarity with the area so let me know what ...

Re: El Niño's revenge.

February was extremely dry here in the Bay Area, but it's not unusual to have a few dry weeks in late winter. The rain we get in March, April and beyond will decide whether El Niño has graced us with enough water to suspend the panic until next winter. The high mountains north of the Bay Area and La...

Anyone hiking tomorrow 11/28 near Phoenix?

Is anyone hiking tomorrow in the Supes or Mazzies? I'm back in town for a few days. I'd need a ride from 32nd St. & Shea.

Re: The 2015! self propelled totals thread.

I found a woman who wants to learn how to hike. Got pretty lucky. On our second date I took her hiking and told her that whenever we bag a peak, there's a good chance that there will be beer in my backpack. Then pulled out a nice chilly one for her. She was hooked.

Re: Best Beer Brewed in Arizona...

20150705 036.JPG I like to enjoy Sex Panther Double Chocolate Porter (San Tan) when I'm in Phoenix. 50% of the time it works every time. I don't know if it's the best beer in AZ, and I wouldn't choose it if I had to choose only one beer to drink the rest of my life, but it's certainly notable. I'm ...

Re: Mine spill in the San Juans

Always fun to blame the government. But things aren't quite that simple. Exactly. Who left the toxic waste there for the government (i.e. taxpayers) to deal with? Why have we allowed a few to profit from our natural resources only to leave the nasty stuff for someone else to deal with? This is what...

Re: Heat-related hiker deaths this year--more than usual?

I'm reading 'Over the Edge: Death in the Grand Canyon' right now, and am in the chapter about "environmental deaths." One thing I will add about that is that the authors pointed out that the big ditch is an "inverted mountain." Hikers attempting to hike a big mountain realize they're in over their h...

BTW that isn't bird doo-doo. It's a scratch because I evidently can only safely park in huge spots like a native Arizonan.

Re: Bears In The News

Mountain Lion of Mountain View.jpg I agree that the bear needed to be removed from developed areas, if only for its own safety. That bear looks pretty healthy from the overhead view, and hopefully he hasn't fattened up on people food. Unfortunately a bear can't survive for long in close proximity t...

I'm rolling to Phoenix next week, and this is one place that I'm going to hit. My little brother works down the street, and he tells me the duck-fat fries are just as good and bad as they sound. Sold!

Re: 2015?: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun!!!!!!

We've had over 3" of rain here in Walnut Creek today with more on the way. This storm is definitely a large pineapple express. I'm not sure how much will make it to Arizona because the main pulse of the storm appears to be tracking northeast over the central half of California. The rain started abou...
